We had a great time - fantastic rally to go and watch. Drivers weren't too keen on it though. We had a chat with Derek Ringer and he said they hated it. Very dangerous in bits, narrow roads with a lot of crap on them. Nasty concrete blocks on the military stages etc etc
Camera is a Fuji FinePix 2800 - 2Meg with 6x optical zoom. Got some really nice shots with it.

Going to my first WRC in Catalunya later this year and am looking forward to getting some good shots.
Have done a bit of rally photography last year, but any hints/tips you have would be most welcome.
Cheers

The Cat is great - easily the best event I've been to because it is good mix of rallying and night life. It's a real party town and the teams love it.
Paul - not easy mate! There is a fair degree of anticipation. What I do is usually leave the camera on automatic and half depress the shutter. This will freeze the light level and shutter speed. You should then get a near instant picture. Still not quite like an SLR, but not far off it.
Also try using the continuous shot option. It will take 4 frames in quick succession if you keep the shutte depressed. Bit of a leap in the dark, as you can't see what you are taking, but the results can be quite good. I've got a few shots taken with this feature that I will post up later.
I feel like I'm running a photography clinic here! Don't think I'll being doing Josh out of a job just yet though! The only real tips I would give would be have patience, look for unusual angles and don't waste too much time behind the camera, as you end up missing the cars!
Cheers

paul, i have a coolpix 880 and reading the manual the other day u can change the settings or use the 'M' setting which allows u to take a pic instantly and also change shutter speeds to get action shots or moving objects
its a bit to take in all at once but after a few attempts and reading it a couple of times u understand it all.
as someone else said, holding the button halfway down helps as u have the camera ready to snap.
i had a bit of test run at Billing on sunday messing around with apertures and shutter speeds, exposures. needed it with the colours of some of the cars there
see pics here
btw top rally pics, i missed all the coverage on tv over the w/e, gutted. really wanted to see this one.

I found the best way was to turn your camera to manual, whack the shutter speed up to max, open the aperture full, if the light is bad adjust the brightness and manually set the focus. Take a few test shots, if it is too dark or bright play arround a bit, but only drop the shutter speed if all else fails.
I had mine static on a tripod and got the cars and the background sharp using this method.
Hope to post some pics soon!

two things IMO
- that new Skoda actually looks quite phat!!!!
- the Scooby spoiler looks TOTALLY rubbish, almost like a kid designed it out of a shoebox or something
