Default A complete a retrospective of my MY02 WRX project car

Given that the car is now back to standard ready to sell, and I have a free weekend, I decided to archive my track videos and photos.

Here is a chronological history of my car.

Stage one: November 2002
fresh from the dealers, delivery mileage, electrically adjustable Morrette headlights, white indicators

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743408&outx=600&oq=0

Stage two: January 2003
fitted mudflaps over Christmas, followed by a trip to TSL for Eibach suspension, geometry setup, quick shift and grp n centre and rear exhaust

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743403&outx=600&oq=0

Stage three: February 2003
ditched the ironing board in favour of rallytech

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743398&outx=600&oq=0

Stage four: February 2003
also ditched the heavy standard wheels in favour of flyweight team dynamics pro race one. 7kg and full FIA spec with Square bead, increasing blowout safety and reducing unsprung weight significantly, allowing the suspension to work faster.

http://edbartlett6649.fotopic.net/p3743410.html
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743406&outx=600&oq=0

Stage five: March 2003
private numberplate, and removed the Subaru boot badging as it looks too cluttered

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743411&outx=600&oq=0

Stage six: April 2003
after much deliberation about brakes, finally settle on Prodrive Alcon 4-pots with 330mm discs, uprating fluid and hoses at the same time. Also uprate the rear antiroll bar with white line 22mm adjustable and replace the pathetic plastic drop links with powerflex alloy parts

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743405&outx=600&oq=0

Stage seven: May 2003
Some more purely aesthetic modifications in time for Japfest, consisting of UK300 lip, ProDrive grille, fog covers, STI7 scoop, carbon inserts, colour-coded side skirts and a smaller front numberplate.

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743407&outx=600&oq=0

Stage eight: June 2003
The car now handles too well for the power, but I want to get all the engine monitoring aspects in place first. PLump for SECS ECU monitor, Defi boost gauge and shift light, and dash-mounted knocklink.

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743402&outx=600&oq=0
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743414&outx=600&oq=0

Stage nine: July 2003
Bigger power needs cooler charge temps! Replace the weedy standard intercooler with a giant APS unit!

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743399&outx=600&oq=0

Stage 10: August 2003
Ouch, expensive month and nothing tarty to show for it
under the bonnet however, we have open neck grp a downpipe, equal length manifold headers and flexi up-pipe (all lagged), a high flow fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator running at 3 bar, and a custom ECU remap. Peak figures were 299 / 293, peaking at 1.4 bar and holding 1.2bar. At the mappers request we put in a small safety margin, leaving it at 289/281, with a very nice flat torque curve for the TD04.

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743418&outx=600&oq=0

Stage 11: September 2003
still not completely happy with the handling, so decided to add front and rear strut braces. Anybody who is told the new age car does not require these, ignore them, they're lying. Makes the car twitchy across bumpy b-roads, but on anything approaching smooth roads, and particularly on track, the difference is astounding.

Also change the standard steering rack for a 2.2 turn Sti unit, which is simply amazing.

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743417&outx=600&oq=0
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743412&outx=600&oq=0

Stage 12: October 2003
too many scoobs with rallytech spoilers now, so get Ian Litchfield to import a sexy adjustable carbon number

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743416&outx=600&oq=0
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743413&outx=600&oq=0

Stage 13: November 2003
No excuse for the Defi gauges, I just love them
also fitted clarion multimedia head unit.

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743409&outx=600&oq=0

Finished

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743400&outx=600&oq=0
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743397&outx=600&oq=0
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3743404&outx=600&oq=0

And that's it! Frankly I could have gone further with bigger turbo and injectors etc, but with the Spec C making waves, and the limitations of the WRX block + no front LSD or 6 spd box, it was as far as I was prepared to go.

Very nice car mate, looks(ed) lovely.

What made you go for the Prodrive 4 pot brakes rather than say a AP 4 pot or 6 pot set?

Carbon spoiler looks great, how much was it if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers,

Chris.

Chris, a mixture of recommendations from people with P1's who do lots of tracktime, plus being offered a set brand new for a very good price

Spoiler was about £450-500 IIRC

The thing that worries me is that I am already halfway through Stage 2 on my MY03, and I want to follow almost exactly the same path....... Have you put any estimates on how much it all cost? (or are you too afraid?!).

The Defi Pod and guages look great. Did you fit them yourself? Are they reasonably straightforward?

Finally, I have never really liked those carbon spoilers, but it really seems to work on your car (it must be the colour).

Drexel - change of plan, I was gonna lose too much money

PC555 - did the install myself after getting somebody to extend the LEDs onto long wires from the main case. Its surprisingly easy. I'm about to replace the dash section with an un-drilled one, so let me know if you wanna swop

Jolley - gulp. I'm not sure you really want to know, it may discourage you. I'm happy to tell you....if you really want to know

The Defi's were fairly easy. I'm not the most mehanically minded person but I know my way around. The hardest part was a)removing the blanking plug on top of the block for the oil tem sensor and b)removing the alternator coil to fit the oil pressure sensor. It was a great sense of achievement starting them up for the first time and well worth the stress

Question

Ed

Don't suppose you still have the housing for the dash top SECS monitor for sale do you (or the DEFI pod and gauges for that matter). Would have to fit into My01 WRX Bugeye though and don't know if the dash top is different?

Thanks

Nick

Talking

Whats the next purchase Ed, are you able to still run another Scoob or have you had to get something a little more practical for work..... and I still find it amazing that there are hardly any Green Wrx's about... it really is quite a colour when it is looked after well
Nice to see you back on the boards mate, I used to enjoy reading your threads as your projects developed.

Simon, something practical and fun for summer that the missus can also drive (she's just finally learning). Thinking maybe CRX VTEC with the folding roof. V girly, but still quick, good to drive, roofless for summer etc.

Will almost surely be back after summer with a spec c, although seriously tempted to import a sti5 ra and track mod it...or maybe a TVR 350C.....just need to get the business running on all cylinders first

Granby, no its the single disc, and is now fitted back in the car as the SECS unit has been taken out, sorry

Great thread... Lovely car, interesting choice going for green, but as has been said above; just shows that when its looked after properly and with the right mods it can look absolutely stunning!!

A credit to you mate... Soz to hear you're selling it though.

I have rated this thread BTW!!

Cheers,
Grant

Grant, it was a combination of wanting something other than WR blue, my missus' powers of persuasion, and what they had left on central stcok computer when I bought mine :d

Thanks for the kind remarks

Martin, its funny, they have actually discontinued that colour now because they sold so badly. If you look at many of the dealers courtesy cars, they are often green. What makes me laugh is how many Scooby owners ask if I had it resprayed

Well played Ed, lovely car, I'm a fellow 2002 owner with some similar mods and aspirations (apart from the whole equal length headers malarky which scares me a little )

best of luck with your business and we hope to see you back with another scoob (or TVR ) soon
