Smile Those crowded Dales roads...

Just been up to the Lake District for a few days
While there, i thought i would take a trip over to the Yorkshire Dales.

God the roads were busy.
I must have seen at least 7 cars

And a couple of the lake district

Cool!

Have just booked a cottage for a weeks break in the Lake District with the Scoob. Any recommendations of where to go?

For starters take a look at the A592 Kirkstone pass. This runs north out of Windermere.
Then theres the B5289 Honister pass. This runs south in a loop from Keswick past Buttermere and Crummock water.

But my favorite is Wrynose pass - Hardknott pass. Its a very tight steep minor road.
The scenery will blow your socks off
If you start the journey from the A593 at Skelwith Bridge and travel west towards Little Langdale, you will be on the right road.
And here's a nice little finish for you. When you reach Eskdale Green by the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, take a left turn onto another unclassified road signposted Ulpha. This road is a complete contrast. Good surface, sweeping bends... a great scooby road
From Ulpha its easy enough to get back to civilization via the A595 or A593.
Its worth looking for this detour, as the costal A595 road is pretty boring

Hope this helps, and enjoy your stay

Yeah, its not really the sort of road for a full on blast, but it certainly is interesting
I have been along it a few times now, but i remember the first time
It was a bit of a surprise. I just kept thinking dont stall on one of those hairpins!

The second half of the trip to Ulpha is alot quicker

What happened to you then Corradoboy.
I would'nt fancy loosing it on that road

Didn't lose it, TBH I still don't know what I hit. Went back for a look after pulling over to assess the damage and there was nothing there. All I can guess is it was a rock in the road and due to the very heavy rain and the series of hairpins mostly being unsighted I hit it, and must have knocked it off the road out of the way.

Last bit's scary when you seem to be going downhill for ever. I usually stop 1/2 way to let the brakes cool a bit.

I dont know which is worse, going up the hairpins when the front of the car is pointing in the air and you cant see where you are driving...
OR...
Comming down the hairpins when i am frightened of grounding my splitter

But i dont want to put SirFozzalot off. Its one of those roads that everyone should do at least once in their lives

Cool

Nice pics Greg

We will be going up there soon

SirFozz' - Do the Kirkstone Pass A592 from Windermere - Pooley Bridge up the side of Ullswater, but watch out for coaches and pick a nice clear day as it can be aweful weather at the top

Grizedale is a great drive Haverthwaite - Hawkshead - B5285 - Coniston - A593 - B5343 through Langdale is best done anti-clockwise Check out the pubs up there for lunch too

The B5289 (Buttermere - Honister Pass - Derwent Water) and B5292 Whinlattter Pass loop can be done either way, or both and make sure you do the little side road up to Ashess Bridge at the side of Derwent Water, possibly one of the most photographed bit of the lakes

lol @ corradoboy - sorry about your wheels mate... wrynose / hardknott passes are a couple of those roads were you wish you could turn back - it's quite un-nerving when you have to guess where the road is!

no pics of hardknott pass but got a few of honister -

a good little drive this from Keswick (or Cockermouth) plenty of pic opportunities from the slate mine at the top.

took this of wastwater at the weekend...

This is turning into " I love the lake district" thread
It is a stunning area though.

CW The turn off over ashness bridge is signposted Watendlath.
Once over the bridge, the road becomes extremely chalangeing. Its single track, very twisty with boulders sticking out each side of the road covered in scrapes of car paint
Its a dead end road, and at the top there is a little hamlet and a lake.. very scenic

Scooby mad
Yes, i have been to the places mentioned, but as you say, there is so much more to see.

Like the shot of Wast Water. Thats the road to Wasdale Head isnt it. Havent been down there for about 3 years.

In 7 days i covered 712 miles including return journey, and £123 of optimax
