Question Calling Scooby / PDA SatNav Users

Finally treated myself to a PDA SatNav system (IPAQ 2210, Fortuna Clip-On BlueTooth GPS, TomTom Navigator 3, etc.).

Had a test fitting / test run last night. I've bought a windscreen mount for the PDA and it bounces around quite a bit whilst driving, quite annoying. Not sure if it's because I bought a cheapo one http://www.pdamods.com/proddetail.as...ILVERWS&cat=23

At the moment its on the right hand side of the car by the A-Pillar, I've now moved it so its low enough to fix the bottom of the mount to the dash (with blu-tack for now!) to stop it wobbling. Ultimately I don't want it there though as I've got a boost guage that will occupy that spot when I get round to fitting it

Anyway what mounts are you all using and whereabouts on the dash do you have it, recommendations for good ones and ones to steer clear of please Pics would be ace I've got a MY00 Classic.

I guess a vent mount may be the way forward but you can't close off the centre vents, not sure I want warm air blowing over my PDA, may make it overheat?

Cheers,

Graz

Interesting I'm in the same boat as you. Although my mount actually works and isnt that bad in the wobbling stakes.
Maybe it was a Muppet in a previous life wibble wibble

I've got a ventmount one from my last car....but I don't think it well fit too well in the Scooby....though I wouldn't worry about over heating.

I think I'm gonna go for a dash mount next.

Thumbs up

I have a vent mount one in the P1 works really well with no rattling. Its part of the official tom tom car kit. I always run the hot air fom the windscreen and footwell vents so dont worry about overheating. I found the windscreen one was a nightmare bounced all over the place.

I've got mine screen mounted:

It does move a bit, but nothing too bad. I was going to fit a small pad on the back of the unit to cushion it and stop it banging against the dash. Other than that, I'm not sure there is a lot you can do.

Excellent, keep it coming, all useful info . I must say the Brodit kit looks the dogs, well worth the cash methinks.

The Brodits are very good, have one across the centre vents in my Outback for the PDA and one on the centre console for a mobile.

I had one of the centrally mounted brodit clips. Absolutely excellent and I got one with built-in charger too. Used to regularly blast it with hot air and no problems.

Edit to say when i removed it after it being there a year there was absolutely no trace of it ever being there...

Have to agree, the brodit mounts are the best, i have one for a MY00 on the centre vent, works a treat and well within easy access.

I use 3M sticky velcro for mine- works well, takes seconds to fit, and is cheap as chips.

I've just recieived my Brodit 652885 - Impreza 01-04 bracket, which fits over the right hand central air vent.

It cost £16 delivered, from www.handnav.co.uk.

I will be using an XDAII, TomTom and the Fortuna clip-on BT GPS receiver. Until the dedicated car-kit is available, I may use one of the magnetic mounts initially, to secure the PDA to the bracket.

Will post pics at the weekend, if any one wants them?

I have the tom tom car kit for 4150. This isn't the goose mount like shown above, its a new stubby type. It holds on well, but the scooby windscreen angle means that its quite tricky to get the PDA in unless you tilt it down (which makes it loose)

I have the same mount as you on my classic. I have mine on the right with it stuck to the windscreen and pushed down hard against the dash so it won't move.

Just ordered a Brodit centre mount and PDA holder with connector (already got a 12v charger).

Should have asked on ScoobyNet first, could have saved myself £16

This is a similiar set up to what i am considering, although i may go for the 1940 as its a lot slimmer. How do you find it?? Have you got the traffic alert set up??

To be honest I've only just got it so still getting used to it. The Bluetooth seems to be a bit troublesome with 2210 and TTN3 setup, I find I have to do things in a certain order to get it to play ball. Apparently I'm not alone, www.pocketgps.co.uk has a lot of useful info. I've also lost complete satellite lock with the Fortuna GPS twice now, always in the same spot on the way to work. No idea why, should have a clear view of the sky, and generally the Fotuna GPS is very sensitive getting a signal in most conditions. May be a strong interfering signal in that location. Might try it in XTRAC mode tomorrow Other than those minor problems all good so far. Need to try it on some longer trips, off to Scotland on holiday soon, that should be a proper test.

I don't have traffic alert set up yet. I do have the speed camera warnings set up though, see the URL above, very useful

I went for the 2210 as it has a CF and SD card slot, makes it more flexible for me as I intend to occupy one of the slots with a WLAN card in future (of course some of the higher end IPAQs have WLAN built in).

I've already got an RA2 for camera alert, and plan to use the RA as the GPS reciever, and connect to my mobile via blue tooth for the traffic alerts. I'm just a little wary about shelling out £400 for a PDA based Tomtom system that i've heard has some problems, when you can buy the Tomtom GO for about the same. But i don't really want the GO as you cannot get the traffic alert, which is one of the major reasons i want it.

All the problems I've heard about are with Bluetooth GPS receivers. I expect TomTom will sort it eventually, just a case of waiting for the patches to appear.

If your using a wired GPS then I would expect it to work better.

Anyway no major lockups on mine yet <touch wood>.

I've used a RAM (Round-a-mount) from GPS Warehouse for the last four years, first on a Garmin eMap and for the last 18 months on an iPAQ 3970 and Emtac BT GPS. The Ram suction cup is very stable and the arms are available in different lengths and with different cradles on the end. The only issue I find is in the hottest weather when the black rubber around the back of the suction cup's mount softens and the cradle wobbles until the a/c has cooled the car a bit. I'll add a picture of the ram mount in situ. The GPS is velcro'd to the top of the steering column and works fine. Generally pulls in as many sats as my Origin B2 does with it's receiver in the centre of the dash at the base of the windscreen.

I've just swapped the OE headunit for a Blaupunkt DAB unit and the dashmount bracket that used to stick out through the gap between the radio and the trim around it won't fit as the Blaupunkt is wider than the opening. I ordered the brodit centre mount (MY02) and it wouldn't fit properly. Each end fitted fine but it was too short and the amount of tension required to spring the ends apart enough to reach made the end under the clock panel ping out. Handnav have offered to take it back, and I hacksawed a little piece out of the trim panel to allow the dashmount bracket to fit again.

Curious to know if anybody has the brodit proclip on the vents in a bug-eye or later.
Dox
