Smile Chrome spray paint

I thought i'd give it a go. My initial thoughts were that why should I pay £200+VAT for a spec-R washer bottle when I could just "bling" the original one . I thought i'd do a trial run first of all by using the Carbon Cannister. I cleaned it, sanded it, re-cleaned it, primed it & then sprayed it.

I personally think it turned out pretty good....a lot better than the original horrible black colour that had gone all manky . What do you think:

I used some "chrome" paint years ago and as soon as you touched it, it went dull and showed up every mark.

I suppose paint technology has moved on since (about) 1986, so maybe you won't have any such problems.

Cheers Steve. The paint's not bad but obviously not on par with proper polished metal. I spose it's as shiney as you can get plastic to look by using a spray can

It's been on the car for only today so I spose i'll just have to wait & see what happens with the dirt effect on it. I can't complain though as like I say it's 10 times better than it was.

If after a few days it starts to look a bit worse for ware (The drive to Lincoln on Tuesday should prove a decent test ) then I may need to think of other options for the washer bottle. Might take it to a paint shop for a pro job in red to match the rest of the engine bay. They could leave out a small section to see the water level

What about a clear lacquer on top?

used it it the past. Need to get ot really smooth b4 spray painting.

Also tried lacquer on top. That just dulls the finish. DO NOT lacquer

Yup tested with lacquer as well & as Ray says it really dulls the finish. It gives a real glossy covering but the look turns from metallic to just grey!!

Opted for about 3-4 layers of paint instead

If it's the Plasti-Cote stuff, Don't put any polish or wax on it!

It goes grey!

Not the most durable of paints - I gave up in the engine bling department and went back to black

Mmmm this stuff seems to be quite a job to maintain. May have to take a different approach on the washer bottle

£4 for the primer & £4 for the paint so it was hardly going to break the bank for a trial run
