Xmas Stages pics (lots!!!!)
Hi
This was my first rally with my new 300D, these are some of the 105 shots I took They're a faily mixed bunch really, some good, some rubbish! The camera doesn't seem too much different to my last one but with it being digital and not costing a fortune per duff pic I've experimented a little and dropped to 1/125 shutter speed which I wouldn't normally do so some are a bit shakey, the sun was very bright at times so some are over exposed...this is why I went digital though so I can look at the results and try summat different! I've still a long way to go with this camera but see what you think to these

Thanks guys!
The weather was kind, only one or two very light showers, hardly worth putting my hood up for, it was chuffing cold out of the sun though
As for passes, nah, who needs em! We wandered where ever we liked all day and didn't get challenged once! Actually that's a lie, one guy asked us to stop, I carried on in head down, sorry mate didn't hear you styleeee, turns out I was about to be run over by the course closer After that we just carried on, job's a guddun
Attu, cool pic...I think POC from here doesn't have the K...

Some good shots there Bob - especially towards the end of the ones you've posted. What lens were you using? I can see the difference between my Fuji and a proper DLSR. I've been very tempted to get the 300D recently aswell. I've backed off because I know that while buying the basic camera isn't a problem, I'd end up paying a small fortune for a decent lens!

Cheers Chris
I'm just using my old 75-300 that I got with my 300V
You should see the difference a DSLR makes

Marty, save the pics and send them to your mate if you want...or I can send you the originals, they're 2mb mind Keep an eye out in motorsport general, if you can put up with the crap me and ste.w post you'll find some great info on upcoming events, next month's Jack Frost stages at Croft for example
Buzzer, cheers, I like that one, it was one of the first of the day too That's where I'll be for the first stage of the Jack Frost I reckon

I had it on shutter priority all day at 1/125 though for the last few, as the light was fading I went from 100 to 800 ISO
I pick the spot where I want to take the pic, focus on that and then keep the button half pressed, pan backwards till I spot the car, pan with it till it reaches the predetermined spot, FIRE!!!

That's the technique - nice work Bob
You shouldn't get overexposure just for using 1/125th (unless it's very, very bright indeed!) - maybe next time you could try full manual mode if you're taking many shots under the same lighting conditions. It's also worth trying some faster shutter speeds too to help capture flying debris; I tend to use 1/125 or thereabouts for circuit racing but 1/250 or faster for rallying.

I've deleted them off the camera now or else I'd tell you the aperture too, unless some one know if you can get it from the jpeg, I just had a look, I can tell you what time they were taken at...

The sun was really bright for the first lot, I actually took a couple at 1/180 and then went to 1/125 thinking it was faster, it wasn't till I was on mi way home I realised I was stoooopid! I'm liking the slower shutter speeds, I like to get some movement in my pics, I see what you're saying in that you get mud and stones flying but it's also easy to make the car look like it's stopped. At least with digital I can try all this without the need to remortgage...the 2gb card has half paid for itself already and I've only had the camera a couple of weeks

The slow speeds definitely work well and I like the feeling of movement too - and I think that, for tarmac stages, you're absolutely right.
But: here's a shot taken at the Tempest rally at 1/320 sec, f/7.1, ISO 640. A slower speed might have shown more movement in the wheels, but I think the drama here is the flying gravel which also gives a feeling of motion. With a slower shutter, it would have been lost as a blur.
Is there a calendar somewhere giving rally dates? I really must get to more this year.

Yeah that's cool, there's movement in the background too
www.britishrally.co.uk have a calendar, not looked at it for a while though. Have a peek in motorsport general, there's usually a thread for upcoming events in there
Oh yeah, british rally do a photo comp, I'm just about to mail my entry
