Well Iain, I am an upholsterer by trade, so it could be said that it is a professional job!!
First time i've really worked with leather, it did stress me up a bit I must say, glad it's done now, took roughly 8 days for those that wanna work out what it would have cost, plus the leather!!

Sticky, do you have someone in mind to do it, or were you gonna try yourself?? you'll need access to an industrial sewing machine, at times I was stitching through up to 8 thicknesses, no domestic machine will cope with that!! plus, you need to have a rough idea what you're doing, i've been doing domestic upholstery for 19 years, so I know the basics you could say!!
Good luck, you need alot of patience too!!

i was going to do the door cards myself and let sumbody else do the seats

to be honest i was only going to strip the standerd ones down and replace the grey patches with a red and white combo and reuse the standerd cloth for the rest (i would prefere not to slide about while going around corners

i do have a pretty good idea what im doing, i built nissan micra seats for about 2 years in a factory

we actualy compleaty re did my mates primera seats in leather, but it was easy, we aquired the compleate covers from a leather model car and transfered them over to his frames LOL

I'd re-trim my interior too if I had suspect stains on the drivers seat!

the stain was coffee, I used to sit in the car every day eating my dinner!! bought a banger now though!

It is not possible to take the original covers off, and then re-fit them, they are glued on, and get wrecked in the removal process!!

Having done it, I would say it's not possible, but if you think you can do it, good luck!!
The fabric is stuck to a very thin layer of foam, which is then stuck to the seat base, mine came off in about a million bits!

You can buy upholstery hides from.

Andrew Muirhead and Sons (Scotland - deliver world wide)

Crest Leather (Leeds - deliver world wide)

Bridge of Weir (Scotland - deliver world wide)

There are loads of leather merchants around but those stated are manufacturers. You can buy a minimum of 1 skin, which works out at approximately 50 square feet.

AM & BoW cost roughly the same, they may charge independant purchasers more im not sure.......but I pay £2.20 - £2.40 per foot for these.

Crest range varies a lot, but is generally cheaper.

Make sure you quizz them about what leather you are after, dont just buy "black leather", as it should be treated differently, for wear and tear and how it reacts to sweat and heat etc.

All of BoW leather is treated to airplane grade, so you are gtg with this. Crest do an automotive leather range (a million shades of grey lol). Check with the supplier, the last thing you want to do is sit down and find the colour has stained your trousers lol.

Good luck if you do this yourself

I was more than happy with the price, and the quality, having been an upholstere for years I do know a little, so I know that it's good stuff, price to me is irrelevant when I want something to be right!!
