Cool Today's Small Project Was Fitting A Hybrid FMIC on DannyBoy007's UK Turbo....

Well quite a day was had and I got the job of hosting and posting, we took around 50 pictures through the day so I'll post as many as I can showing the progress.

Plenty of hands were present.... myself, Simb, BigDaz, Matscooby, Kjdmk1, PippyRips and the man himself Dan who is very trusting

Firstly Danny Boy's Turbo

Yes it's in need of a clean but that's for another day

After stripping the front down we had to get the Gazebo up quickly as the rain came down

Then the front was stripped down ready for work to start

As Daz took a break the FMIC was offered up so we could see exactly what was needed to be modified in order to fit the pipework

Hmmm there is a bracket in the way

That's better

Some of the pipework was just offered up to give us a better idea of the space we had to work within..... not a lot I'll add

We were all impressed with the quality of the mount as you can see it's a snug fit

To Be Continued............

The two holes in the wing had to be joined together in order for the pipework to be fed through

We were missing one single item and you can see where Kev had a small piece of green tubing which improvised quite nicely until the correct part can be found... Don't forget that Dan

A little earlier we had wire brushed the beam down as we had exposed some flaking paint... so I set to work with the hammerite along with Abi for company

Danny set to work on the bumper.... this was a job for the owner

To Be Continued.......

Just starting to cut out more.... Dan decides to loose the numberplate holder completely as he intends to mount a square plate over one of the fog light.
The covers are being sprayed as we speak.

Daz offers the bumper back to see how much fine Dremmel tuning is needed

As the bumper is finished it's time to check the work that has been done so far and get ready for the re build

Simb holds the old top mount up to show the size difference

Suprising difference to

With everything in place the bumper goes back on mat and Danny get to work

The fog covers will not be ready until next week so the gaps have to remain for a few days yet.

To Be Continued......

Now anyone that knows Dan is well aware that his car is not washed that often.... so we all got on to him and Simb got the soap out

Dan, mat and myself get to work... simb's on the hosepipe and camera, Daz does not know what a sponge is either

Gold wheels we never knew that

Finally she's finished

A very imposing sight in the rear view mirror from now on !!

A few under the bonnet

And finally she's finished.... shame the last pic was a little out of focus and then the camera's battery gave out

A very productive day was had by all

Simon

There is a slight feeling of lag but Dan's got a few more plans on this phase of his cars development... no doubt he will show up soon to go into more details.

We thought a good pictorial guide would help a few people out

I don't think Dan's got plans for mesh.... to restrictive lol

Cheers Si, Great pictures.

Again I can't thank everyone enough

I can't fault the hybrid kit, the quality of the brackets, hoses, front mount and pipe work is much better some of the cheaper ones I've seen.

None of us had done one before and read on here that it takes around 8 hours. We started at around 10 and finished at around 5.30 so pretty much spot on, it didn't take long to strip the bumper/lights etc off, had to cut two of the bolts off as these didn't want to come off. feeding the pipe work and triming/mouding(With a big hammer) the body work to allow pipes to connect took a while, By far the most time comsuming part was cutting the bumper, we must of spent 3 hours cutting it and then recutting it.

With regards to the green pipe, I turns out you don't get the 50mm samco to connect the turbo to the intercooler piping. we couldn't get one from anywhere being a sunday, but it turns out Kev had some 50mm reinforced silicon tubing in his garden(Don't ask what for) which fitted a treat. I've ordered a samco and some heat lag today.

Simb's got the same kit and that pipe was also not included. So if buying one, make sure you order the hose before you start an install.

I was really surprised how much of the bumper we had to remove. This we did with a dremel, we must of offered it up and then recut atleast ten times, but it looks really good. I seen some door edging strip to from these guys http://www.automobiletrim.com/edge-trim-plastic.html which should go over the cut part of the umper to tidy things up a little.

Driving home (which is 110 miles as I live in west wales and the other guys live in south wales) With in half a mile of getting on the motorway I was stuck in a massive traffic jam!!!!! kept an eye on the coolent temp, as I was a little worried about air flow to the rad etc but it didn't go above 95c. Having no top mount I'm sure this acted like a chimney and aloud some of the heat from the engine to escape.

With regards to lag, You don't notice it until your accelerating hard and you change gear, you can hear the turbo spool and then a split second later you have power. (I would say it's no more then quater of a second) It feels like it's pulling alot stronger and 100 comes alot faster than it used too!!!!

With regards to a remap, goner have a bigger turbo fitted (From Simb's type R) first and then off for a remap.

Cracking post fellas - good work . I can imagine someone saying "oh bugger, we need a piece of 50mm silicone hose" and someone else chipping in with "I've got some in the shed"....class.... .

cheers lads,

The intercooler is a hybrid one. I'll pm you both details.

It did look like I would be saying in south wales for the night until the shops opened!! as we had already cut the y peice on the old intercooler to see if that would fit!!!!!

Si, I've heard all about the borrowing of Simb's 5Zigen, can't blame you mate, sounds awesome and looks the business

I picked one up off here last weekend, had it fitted when I was up in swindon, All for £165!!!!!

Don't worry about the engine looking dirty, I found one of simb's post about when he cleaned the engine, seems to be a bit of pro at it, so that will be another weekend job round his house!!!!! mind you it is never goner be a clean as yours!!!

Si - Excellent thread mate, it must of taken you ages to put the pic's and comments together, hopefully not aslong as fitting the FMIC.

Looking at the pic's you can't fault the job, the allignment is spot on!!, I think we had a good team and this won't be the last time we get together and do it again.

Fatman - I take it as a compliment with a car like yours, you wanting something off mine

Dan - you will now have a constant reminder how your car looks when it's clean, your have to change the log book back to Blue now

Listening to Dan's 5Zigen was hard as it reminds me of mine which I have'nt heard for near two months

We'll have to do the engine bay, It totally transforms the car. I'll have a hunt around for that CD2 stuff and I'll come down and you can show me how it's done!!! plus make a night out of it!!!!!

With regards to the spliter, Yep like that one, I'm also liking the P1 style, but the P1 has 3 wholes just under where the intercooler is, So we might be back to the one above. whats is called and where from??
