Default any keen gardeners know what tree this is?

as you can see it's a bit wiered it has little spikey bits on the trunk?

I've sent this to my Dad who's a Horticulturist and has worked for the BBC on Gardeners World, Monty Don and won medals at Various RHS Shows amongst other things... If he doesn't know then I'll be very surprised..

Hi Mate. Dad was away.. but here's his response:

The tree you wanted to know about is called Aralia elata I cannot be sure it is elata until we see the flowers, there should be long flower spikes of small white flowers,either in late summer or autumn. If it has very prickly stems (really antisocial) then it is more likely to be Aralia spinosa.
These trees can grow up to 30ft tall and just as wide, but they are fully hardy, if the roots are disturbed they will throw up suckers aroud the base of the tree.

Still Gibberish to me (it has no engine ).. but I posted due to the extra detail he's given..
