Alot of manufactures seem to be going for the sitting back hatch back look with that rear window that rises at the bottom in a triangular way...You could include the Lexus RX and BMW X5 and X3 as they have a similar shape from the side but not small hatch backs like the others.
Add some others if you know some

My dad and mum went into Souls of Onley Subaru Dealer and Subaru UK dealers have sold 4 new hatch impreza's.
They also told them that they hope to see 8000 cars next year
somehow I don't think so.

I can't believe they have had to design the car to look like a rust go slow Ford Focus to be able to try and sell the car.
The car has a very good reputation as it is and rally heritage but they want to sell more to gain more money I suppose. So they designed it to compete with other makes.
So I think anyway. So it does look crap. I can remember about in 1997 seeing a Subaru Impreza and thinking I really want to hav one of them. Very poor then but ten years later I hav one love it. But I can surely say I don't desire a new 2008 one.

Its a nice enough looking car in its own right....BUT....WHY oh WHY did they have to stick the Impreza badge on it?!?!?!? Its NOT an Impreza!!! And then going further and making a WRX version....then an STi?!? Am I the only man crying here?? FEeeeeeeeck!!!!!
Looks like the Classic pre 2000 and the Blob Eye/Hawk Eye will remain the favourites until Subaru wise up!

...still crying...

I can't believe how close it is to the Mazda 3. I do think the STi with a few alterations will be a hot looking hatch... but it is not and never will be an Impreza for me. They needed to move on but they should have tried to create a new legend not spoil the old one.

I think Subaru dont really understand their market - compared to other cars the Impreza never sold much, but thats because not many people really want a 4WD turbo saloon with a high insurance group, high fuel consumption etc... - I imagine if you compared sales figures to the closest rivals like the Evo then the Impreza is quite a good seller.
If they wanted to make a small hatchback to compete with all the other small hatches on the market, why not just make a 2WD 1.4 and 1.6 like every other manufacturer. It would probably sell as many as any of the other japanese ones.
As it is, the new Impreza is mainly going to compete with niche cars from the big makers like the Focus ST ( bet Ford hardly sell any of them ) - people wanting a small hatchback runaround can buy any one of loads of other cars for £5 or £6K less, so why would they choose an Impreza ??? And buyers who want a performace saloon arent going to bother with it.

The new Impreza will be available as a 1.5l 2wd at 12k. A base car to sell more units! Was this a problem to people who wanted Escort cossies " buggered if ill be seen in a shopping trolley" NO the two were not seen as the same thing. Same here, Top gear mag (Jan 2008 p152) said "Fuji heavy industries has not forgotten what makes a Subaru great. the new Impreza WRX STI is all the proof you'll ever need." or see the blog HERE.
Yes, it looks less individual and yes I think my blob looks better. But when it comes time to trade in I will defiantly look at the new WRX. i love hatch backs much more handy than a saloon and less 'bus like' than a waggon

think subaru have changed the styling and made it look more like a hot hatch,so that it would appeal to a wider range of people. Now Subaru is encouraging direct comparison between the wrx and the latest bunch of hot hatches, like the megane R26 or the focus st.

'Unfortunately there's a downside, and it's quite a big one: the STi is too damn quiet. You remember that great, hugely distinctive burble that the old STi made? Well, it's pretty much absent now unless you're standing behind it and the revs are well up'
WTF? You can't have a Subaru without it's burble

I took my bugeye to watch the final stages of Rally Ireland and along the way got the usual second looks and kids waving in every village. No doubt, the Impreza is an icon (regardless of your views on Bugeyes, Classics etc). At the final stage I spotted one of the new WRXs parked up, first one I had seen. I pointed it out to my brother in law who was accompanying me, and said to him, 'Theres one of the new Imprezas' 'Where?!' he said. Finally, I had to actually direct him to it.
The point is my brother in law has only a passing interest in cars but while he could easily distinguish between a pre-2008 Scooby and Euro/Jap Hatch, he can't now. The only similarity he could see was the colour. I'm not sure if the new model will work and attract a wider mainstream interest. The problem for it in where I live, Ireland, is that they don't offer a diesel, maybe this is next!
