Default Detailed my wife's WRX hatch, but...

Spent a happy 6 hours detailing my wife's MY08 WRX hatch yesterday...was really pleased with the results, although pearlescent white is not the easiest to get any depth.

Fitted new wheels (thanks Matthew at poleposition) and an STi quad exhaust (thanks to VXRT) which we're really really pleased with - waiting on a front splitter to complete the look.

Anyway, went out tonight to take some pictures in the sun, and have been gobsmacked to see the front bumper is a totally different colour!!

I didn't spot this even when detailing, so maybe it's a trick of the light - will take some new photos out of direct sunlight I think

Anyway, here you go...will follow up with more pictures when I can find somewhere to show off the reflections.

Looks very tidy, I'd add the red light tint kit at the rear too to finish it off

It's not the wrong shade, look at the rear bumper which is the same,it's just how they look in direct sunlight as its a plastic panel along side metal ones and pearl white is a Sod for looking different in theses circumstances

I did wonder, Ryan, as I couldn't understand how we'd not noticed it before!!!

Why does the splitter-thingy at the bottom of the bumper not look different then?

this is a lovely car!! quick question about the exhaust tho does it bring back the burble as every 2.5l engine I've heard with a different exhaust still doesn't really sound like a subaru should?

It is down to the thickness of the plastic alot of the time Tim,bumpers are very thin and as such disperse heat differently to metal and also thicker plastic such as the splitter which leads to the colour layer laying in a different way which doesn't make sense I know but it happens!

You can paint a wing/bumper at the same time ie passing from one panel over the other obviously with the same paint in the same gun and it still doesn't look the same out in direct sunlight!

Very frustrating for us painter's but then some colours are a lot better for matching up.

TBH it sounds no different to the stock WRX pipe...quiet and boring

I have the STi centre resonator pipe as well (didn't bother to fit that as it was missing its flange) - but think I might try cutting the resonator out completely

Thanks for explaining Ryan - and there was I thinking we needed to get it up to you for some expert attention to the paintwork

Most factorys paint the bumpers off the car too ryan which adds another dimention to matching of the paint colour ! As said paint sits different on plasic compared to metal.if you look at lots of new cars their bumpers are miles off in terms of colour match even more so with silvers.

Car looks ace tho mate.

Very true Carl and in some cases by a different outfit and then shipped to the factory ready painted so the match with all these's things considered is next to none if you look hard enough and in the right[or wrong lol] light

lovely looking hatch.

i work at a dealership and nearly all cars bumpers look different to the wings, plastic paints differently to metal. its an ongoing argument we have with customers almost daily ( they never believe us though, especially when their uncles aunts brothers dogs a painter )

Am relieved to here it's a common "issue" - as I said, we'd not noticed at all before, nor did I as I went over every square millimeter with claybar etc!!

I've been looking at the rear light mods, and maybe I'm misunderstanding what most owners do. I would have thought the thing to do was lose the red fog light to make it clear, and use a red bulb, but what I've seen are red overlays that go around the outside...which will leave a clear section on the left

This Is what I did to my old mans light, called flyeye it's a black sticky film that you apply and makes a hell of a difference

I got about 10 pages in to the 250+ on the the "stand up and show yourselves" thread to find that revolution stock clear lens for the RH light...waiting on a price and will order one in.

We like the clear lights, so don't think will go for stick-on film: the clear lens will make it look symmetrical, and then we'll go for Silvertec bulbs where needed

Yes, I just replaced the back box - it fitted directly to the WRX centre pipe.

I also have the STi centre pipe which seems to have a smaller resonator than the WRX item and so may make for a better sound - but the flange had been cut off so it was not a straight swap

Looks good Tim but as you say white is a PITA to get a decent finish on. I tried Dodo Juice Supernatural and Zymol Glasur on my white CTR and wasn't happy with the finish.

I tried the Werkstat Acrylic Kit on it and the finish is amazing. Way better than the wax.

Only problem is you'll need to strip the wax, clay and maybe even polish again before you use it

I used Menzerna FMJ, mainly because I had some already

The shine is very good tbh, but the photos don't really do it justice. When I re-do it next spring I will give the Werkstat stuff a go - I know it's what PB recommend for white/metallic
