Default Closing roads

How much does it cost to close a road, a relatively minor through road for half a day say ?

Depends on who is closing it.

Council: ned to put up signs warning of closure, and post in the local rag well before.

Police: just do it, for accidents etc.

In both cases, fukc the road users.

Well, for a triathlon etc.
I can see council would incur costs but then again there's spectators in town, to spend money

Some complete **** closed a main road into our village on Easter Bank holiday and for almost two more weeks; just so overhead wires could be put underground.

If you have money here, everyone else can F off. It's rather irritating.

We used to let a local group hold a charity based triathlon on our farm in the winter, they would just use the public lanes that were still open.

They are closing large parts of the A1 from 20/07, 2000-0600 for two weeks.

FFS...why not close ONE carriageway?

Easier traffic management. Makes sense really.

Yep...except they will have to organise and post detours, and there are still loads of trucks about from 4am or so

in an effort to reduce red tape, I believe the law on road closures has been changed/amended (this was primarily to allow street parties - but applies to sporting events too)

it is now much more at the descretion of the local council - rather than some central statute

I guess I was selfishly trying to figure out cost / profit running a triathlon, in particular.

In the states the cost is roughly half on average, and people still believe it's pricey

Supply and demand I suppose , plenty of older people with disposable

Your right to highlight road closures, they form one of the biggest costs (of putting on runs at least)

Yes that too, although you can get that by affiliating with a national sporting body

We have to close roads all the time in London, most of those start at £2500 just for the closure, without parking suspensions (if applicable), bus stop suspensions, bus diversions and traffic management etc.

Easiest thing to do is phone the local council and speak to them, they'll give you all the info you need and tell you if and when you can do it and the costs involved.

Notice periods for most of the London boroughs for example is 8-12 weeks from application for a full closure so don't leave it too late to apply.

My mate does it all the time. Only for short periods though, just to enable him to offload large items from his lorry. All it took was a pair of errrr repossessed police 'ROAD CLOSED' signs.
