Default Off to NYC soon

I fly into New York on the 22nd and apart from the obvious things to see is there anything I should make time to do? We are there for 8 days so have plenty time to do most things?

8 days should be enough. Can't add on anymore than the usual - Ellis Island ferry, Statue, Empire state, Central Park. Proper breakfasts in a diner, and a proper lunch from a deli. etc. And many of the Taxi drivers know less English than the ones back home.

All I'll say is enjoy it. I want to be there, rather than stuck here for crimbo.

Funnily enough I'm making a custom wall paper of the New York skyline to go on the one wall in the extension....yeah I know its stereotypically unoriginal, but I am adding my own personal touch rather than picking up some random ready made print, and I have fond memories of my trip there...and a few cool 35mm prints to scan and blow up and print

I have bought a DSLR camera for my trip and would like to learn how to do light trail pictures as I would like to do some from the Empire state building and some in the streets.

Not sure if they still do them but I did a heli ride around NYC, got it booked and reserved for the two of us from the hotel, taxi straight to it and jumped the long, long, long queue of peeps waiting thanks to the pre-booking, took off from near the water somewhere - well worth it and not expensive (going back a good few years mind) - something different and obviously great views.

I went last week, such a great place I can't wait to go back.

Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Centre) is much better than Empire State, especially for pictures of Central Park and the Empire itself. I had to do both this time but would defo do the Rock at sunset next time.

If you like planes and stuff this is well worth a visit: http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/

You get to see an SR-71 Blackbird up close, go on a nuclear submarine, and the whole thing is on an old aircraft carrier. Pretty cool.

On the subject of which - take plenty of warm clothes as it can be sodding cold at this time of year.

Have fun!

There's alot of free wifi about, the 911 site has free above and below ground. The app lets you search for names/places etc so you can find names of local people to you that were killed and listed on the fountains.

The High Line walk was nice for a little walk & a picture laying on the old railway line.

Defo recommend Beauty & Essex restaurant on Essex Street (I had to go lol) it's hidden out the back of a pawnbrokers like they used to years ago. it's a tiny little shop, you give your name then they open the back door and let you through to a big restaurant (I came back from the toilets laughing, other half asked why, I said there are candles on urinals .... If they had that in Essex hot wax would be everywhere!!! Probably need to book as you wouldn't really know it's there and it was packed!

Ellen's Diner is fun for Lunch, all the waitresses & waiters and wannabe Broadway stars, they serve you then jump up and sing ... Fun place

My time Nyc was short. Travelled down from Boston on Amtrak to Penn station, housed luggage in port authority, walked up n down 5th avenue went Times sq. Then got on coach ( I think ) to Newark
Three weeks prior we were delivering a yacht from Caribbean through New York to Mamaroneck . We arrived, coincidentally, new york 4th July. ( 1986 ) . Huge flotilla of every boat you can imagine including US aircraft carriers.
