Default North South Divide worsens

Apparently according to official figures the UK North South divide is widening.

For every 12 jobs created in the south one is lost in the north. Southern economy is booming, northern economy is still contracting.

Cameron's answer... HS2 will close the gap I didn't realise he had turned into a comedian

And interestingly the same day Oxfam produce a report that suggests, next year the top 1% of the population will have more wealth than the bottom 99%

I think Oxfam's report deals with wealth and populations globally, not just the UK.

Whereas the North/South divide as it is currently in the UK is overwhelmingly a London/rest-of-the-country thing.

Yeah sure - i just thought it an interesting coincidence

The most shocking fact of the morning is that the biggest single cause of death for under 50 males is suicide - wow (and I think by some margin)

And to add, last week my wife was told a guy we both met at a drinks party over Xmas, hung himself last week, leaving a wife a two teenage children ( I spoke at length to the son about his dreams of a career in music - tragic)

Anyway don't want to derail the thread - north / south

Nothing we don't really know though

The economically mobile will tend to follow where the money is and go where there is a better chance to improve their quality of life. It's self perpetuated, more prosperous regions will attract more investments, more investments means more jobs.

We should consider only making benefits available north of watford gap, lets accelerate the divide, the sooner the better.

I thought that the housing market up North had a better percentage growth in recent months which would indicate the jobs market improving i would of thought, although I could be wrong.

Yes and F1 will be able to capitalise on the house price inflation for when he sells up later this year.

Building a high-speed rail link is a bad idea. The money would be better invested in a wall.

Most of my old school/uni mates that went on to high earning jobs have almost all moved down south.

Except one who did go North...but his work is mainly overseas, so his role is more footloose to location.

This thread is just silly.
Everyone knows there is no longer a North-South divide in the UK...that nice Mr Blair told us some years ago.

Oh...and HS2?
Word is it now won't happen, since the projected cost has gone up fourfold in a year.

North - South divide getting worse? Well not for me old boy.
I have tried hating Northerners more than I do but I can't manage it.
I even got up earlier this morning so I could hate them for longer.
