Default Sleeping problems...

I've had quite bad insomnia for about 3 years, tried everything from sleeping tablets, to hypnotherapy but it doesn't help

I've had blood tests and nothing going on there but I'm seriously

Has anyone had something similar and what helped/cured?

Only the old one of drinking a mug of warm milk.

The best thing though I've always find is to completely clear your mind of any thoughts at all. Not as easy as it sounds...

Yep I have same problem, I work nights and I don't think that helps.
On average I sleep about 4 hours, sometimes less. But I find it seriously difficult to get to sleep. I tried sleeping tablets and they did sod all, not the herbal ones, the proper ones from chemist too...it feels like I never want to sleep sometimes.

I sleep well but if there's a rare day when I struggle to sleep, the only reason that stops me from nodding off is because my mind is full and I keep thinking of things. So yes, you need to have an empty mind to help you sleep best. That's easier said than done though!

I tried doing a lot of exercise just before going to bed and that helped for a while but then it just stopped working.

Some days I feel almost crazy with sleep deprivation...

I tend to sleep ok but it's usually broken sleep, I'm normally up two or three times for a pi$$ every night, just the joys of being middle aged I suppose.

A little more info? What is happening as you are lying there? Is your mind racing? Do you fidget? Are noises disturbing you? Are you physically comfortable?

I think your hypnotherapist was rubbish, because he could have got that info from your subconscious and worked out a sleep solution. But hey ho....

I suffered from epileptic fits for a good few years which are triggered by lack of sleep. I know I need around 7.5-8 hours sleep. As soon as I know its getting below 8 hours till I need to get up I start worrying which makes it harder to get to sleep. Sex helps me nod off (no she's not that bad lol) or an empty seems to have the same effect. It's got something to do with chemicals released from the brain when you shoot your load! So next time your struggling to nod off, try knocking one off or better still ask the missus for some action.

Really? Has nothing ever helped you?

The hypnotherapist was teaching me to relax, no delving as to why I'm not sleeping.

Some nights I just put my head on the pillow and my eyelids don't even want to shut The usual issue is I get to sleep fine, its staying asleep for more than 2 hours that is the problem. Once I'm awake its game over for that night.

Shreksta-I read ALOT but like I said, I nod off, its staying asleep that's the main issue.

My best mate suffered badly with this for some years and after trying all remedies and techniques he come close to becoming an alchaholic as in desperation he started relying on a bottle just so he could get some sleep. Im not advocating this in any way but he was willing to try almost anything in deperation and purchased himself a vapouriser which he uses on occasion before bedtime and now sleeps fine. Just sharing is all...

In Certain States The U.S government apparently now prescribes this for such cases ??

I've got 3 sleep disorders. Go and have a sleep study test done as you may find out that it's not just insomnia.

Is it not stress related? I was recently up for voluntary redundancy. To cut a long story short it stressed me right out and I woke in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep. I struggled to get to sleep as well.

Anytime I've struggled to sleep it's been having things on my mind.

Working from 7:00am to 7:00pm works.

Assuming you are on your feet all day.

Problem is your too knackered to do anything else

If its a desk job, forget that idea. Won't burn energy tapping away at a terminal.

On a more serious note. I don't sleep well due to hypersensitive hearing. Never have though since I was a child, so I am used to only sleeping a few hours (although I think its catching up with me nowadays )

I can even tell you which HGV drives past by the timing that each axles that hit the potholes: Tuffnells for example is a rigid twin axle HGV towing a twin axle box trailer, with two pairs of roller shutter that rattle....it goes past every 30-45 minutes every weeknight until about 4:00am.....and I live 300yards from the main road and have double glazing (closed).

Hence the exhaustion idea...If I'm exhausted, I do drop off.

The other one is white noise...prevent the hearing focusing in on particular noises...be it traffic, creaky roof joists, dripping taps, expanding/contacting heating pipes etc, iphone chargers etc. A good quality fan that doesn't vibrate or hum is good for this.

Like I said, I think the hypnotherapist was useless, IMHO

OK so your subconscious is waking you up. Find a decent (as in well recommended and experienced in specialist cases, not just fear of flying/smoking type stuff) hypnotherapist and explain it all to them. It is literally all in the mind. (Assuming you've been to the GP to check for physical sleep disorder checks?)

If you want to give hypnotherapy another shot, this guy is a good friend of mine - we worked together years ago, not in the field of hypnotherapy though.

Bags of exercise immediately before bed doesn't sound ideal tbh
Unless it's horizontal jogging , with a partner

I have trouble staying awake!
I have slept through thunderstorms in aircraft , I always nod off from the terminal until just before take off and don't put me in a chopper , I start stacking the zzzzz's as soon as the turbines are fired up.
I do like to have a few glasses of Shiraz before flying though - Give red wine a try and definitely don't drink coffee .
I'm nodding off now just writing this!

I was going to ask what you guys that can't sleep do?

My job can be quite physical and hard work. I get home some days and I'm asleep in the chair when trying to catch up on paperwork. When I'm working I'm usually knackered when I get home.

Wrong approach.

Don't exercise late in the evening if you're already suffering from the disorderly sleep or a lack of sleep. Instead go for a run in the morning before going to work.

Some days I feel almost crazy with sleep deprivation...
Yes, sleep deprivation will cause you to feel this way. Lack of concentration, foggy brain, walking on the cloud, physical disorientation, erratic behaviour, verbal slurring and stuttering and all that.

Some people report that self-medicating with a herbal remedy St. John Wort has helped them to sleep better. Mind charity has a page on it:

http://www.mind.org.uk/information-s.../#.VSN0h8tFBjo
http://www.mind.org.uk/media/715755/...-wort-2014.pdf

A lot of adult ADHD/Autism (borderline, trait bearers and full fledge) and some other disorders affected folks report irregular sleep or hardly any sleep. A lot of people without any of the disorders (including sleep disorders) are actually stressed, but are living in denial about it. Some are on a treadmill with the usual miseries of the life hence the restlessness, but they're oblivious of it. If physiological reasons have been ruled out, then the other option is to look into underlying psychological reasons for sleep deprivation, with some valid psychotherapeutic help. In addition, one needs to self-regulate with better diet, exercise and fluid intake. Moderate (if you can't erase) caffeine, alcohol and nicotine intake. Not just what's inside your mind, but try identifying other environmental stressors too, that could be causing your sleep problem. Attempt to rid them or learn to adjust with them with some help.

Good luck.

Still, a sleep disorder symptom, if nothing else to cause that. Many high gluten diet eaters report to feel this way as well. You may correct your intakes, which may help. Underactive thyroid in men can also cause sluggishness. Thyroid problems are more common in women, but 1 in 500 men may also suffer from it.

I wouldn't suggest red wine to overcome sleep deprivation. Maladaptive strategy imo.

For me it was always about learning to clear my mind and also another very key point is learning to recognise your "Sleep Window" anytime you start yawning or nodding off in front of the telly don't sit there watching the last 10 mins, GO TO BED and don't think about anything just relax and go to sleep. Try and avoid turning lights on especially if you wake up in the night for a pee, just sit on the toilet so you don't spray the walls and really avoid opening your eyes wide.

All these things work for me and I sleep like a baby now.

As a long term PAST weed smoker I'd say avoid the stuff, I used it for many years thinking it was helping me sleep, might help you to relax a little but it won't help you sleep and it will steal your ambition as well as your dreams while your sleeping. They don't call it dope for nowt.
