American weekend away recommended?
Thinking of taking the missus away for her birthday on 8th Jan.
Anyone have experience of weekends away in America.
I've never been and don't think she has either.
Looking for food, music and maybe a bit of shopping.
I've seen new orleans for 1400 quid Friday to Monday.
Cheers.Justin

It's a long way to go for a weekend, 2 long days in airports and on planes, must be in the region of a 10hr flight or 2 planes, personally wouldn't do a long haul flight for less than 2 weeks. I did 5 days in a 5 star in Turkey for my Mrs 40th and that was as quick a turn around as I'd like and half the flight time, also before all the new security.
America can be fun though, but never been to New Orleans, looked cool on CSI the other night though.

It has to be for a weekend as we've got young kids who would need looking after while we are away.

Rule of thumb, you stay the length in days its take to fly there in hours
3 or 4 time zones will kill you with jet lag at some point

I would either do Miami for the sun and the clubs but it's expensive there or Boston but that will be cold but its a nice little city. Both will be about a 7 hour flight so not too drastic.

New York is just under 6 hours.. Get a morning flight and you will be in your hotel around 2pm.
Loads to see and do in New York but it will be cold in Jan. I have been a few times but did go for a weekend on my first visit. You can fit most of the tourist stuff in but it is pretty hectic and you need a rest at the end of it.
BA often to fly/hotel packages and sometimes you can find a bargain.. 4 nights with flights in the Viceroy was around £700 but it does depend on dates..

Here's a place a bit nearer.

Fly into Kerry Airport which is very near.
Very nice hotel and if you had a hire car you can go for a drive up "Molls Gap " - famous rally stage

In my opinion the best hotel in Ireland; Eat in the kitchen restaurant - every meal is a feast without the pretentious nonsense of some of the other hotels in the country.

Very expensive too, plus a lot of Airlines don't fly non stop either, which is a royal pain if your only going for a few days. Agreed with it not being as busy as it used to be, Vegas certainly felt the pinch of the recession. We went in 2012. Old town was so much better, and seems to be getting more popular year by year - Main Vegas has lost it's magical spark, hotels are far to big, and for that they lack that casino atmosphere - It's hard to explain really, it's just not as good as it was in the 90's..
