FAO People near Stanstead Airport

Carl,
Went past the Three Horseshoes - looked nice from the outside but was more of a local drinking pub inside and they had finished serving food by the time we got there. Carried on the the Prince of Wales which was quite good. They were serving food all day and despite it being middle of the afternoon and nobody else in there (literally) there was a large and varied menu. When the food turned up it was freshly prepared and very good quality for a pub. The portions were huge and when I finally got home I fell asleep on the sofa because I was so bloated and wasted the rest of my afternoon off work!
I could say it was lacking in atmosphere but to be fair it was quite big inside and I think this was just down to it being so empty at that time of day.

I would like to take some people out for lunch somewhere next week. They will have a few hours free whilst waiting for a connecting flight at the airport so it will need to be quite nearby. Can you recommend a nice pub or informal restaurant to me that's in the region.
Thanks in advance....

How nice? Straw Hat in Sawbridgeworth is nice (although Posh and Becks go there as it's at the end of their driveway, don't let that put you off ), as is the Lemon Tree in Bishop's Stortford. More 'pubby' is the Three Willows at Birchanger or the Hoops Inn at Perry Green. Not too far away is the Cricketers at Clavering which is owned by Jamie Oliver's parents.
BTW it's Stansted, not Stanstead
If you want nearby, I guess the Three Willows in Birchanger's your best bet.

Cricketers in Clavering is a bit of a trek isn't it?
Theres a good one (name escapes me) pig and goat or something as you head from SS along A120 to the A10 about 10/15 mins along in a village called Little something.
Jees I'm crap.

Re the above suggestions, going out of the main exit of the airport via the M11 roundabout and the roadworks is a nightmare.
Go the back way out of the airport by Coopers End mini roundabout (go to the big roundabout nearest the terminal (as approaching it, not the one *after* the terminal), then take the first turn after the short term car park entrance - signposted Takeley/Elsenham/Broxted. Thirty yards off the mini roundabout turn left at the second mini roundabout signposted Elsenham/Broxted). Take this road for one mile towards Elsenham, just after a sharp left hand bend there is a right turn at Mole Hill Green towards Broxted/Thaxted. Take this right turn, and the Three Horseshoes pub is just on your left. This is worth a try. If you don't fancy this one, follow the right turn road for about another mile and you will come to a T junction, turn right and the Prince of Wales pub at Broxted is in front of you.
Both these pubs are in the middle of the countryside (well, a few planes passing ), and are only five minutes out of the airport, and easy to get to.

I was going to say Prince of Wales as it's basically at the end of the runway (Start Hill is the other end). Wasn't sure how easy it was to get there from the airport though (but thinking about it, you're right as turning left at that roundabout joins up with the road that's got Elsenham golf club on it). Lots of good roads around there
There was the front half of a Lotus Esprit between Start Hill and Takeley this morning. Rear had been totally destroyed by fire. Any locals know the circumstances?

Thanks all - I've just looked up some of those suggestions and they all look really good
Just in case the flight is delayed, is there anywhere that would serve food all day in case we missed the usual 2-2.30pm last orders?

Many thanks Dave, but no need. Its a shame to think you can't get away from it all at a country pub anymore but all the info is here........

Don't go anywhere near Stanstead!
Remember that plane that crashed and burned a while back? Well several hundred kg of depleted uranium burnt (giving Uranium oxide) and contaminated the whole area!
Breathe in one spec of that and you've had it - I'm not joking. See the current issue of Private Eye if you don't believe me.

Although Stanstead (Abbotts) is also in Essex, but also quite a way from Stansted (Mountfitchet).
PS: That plane crash happened the day I picked my Scoob up from Holland. Had to come back thru' Harlow.

I was on the train into the airport when the Korean Air 747 dropped about a mile away.....still, we live directly under the landing flightpath anyway....
BTW, most of the depleted uranium was recovered from the site.
