Never had it before and **** me does it dish out some pain!
Just been to the docs for the 2nd time cos its getting worse and not better they have doubled my antibiotics and given me a large supply of anti inflamatories. I'm still not confident they are going to do much good for the pain side of things. Any ideas from people that have suffered this nasty little *******o of a germ before? Taking my tonsils out is not an option!!!!!
I have already tried Neurofen and they did sod all and I can't take them or Ibruprofen now I am on anti inflamortories, only paracetemol.
Also how long can I expect it to take for it to bu66er off and leave me alone???
Someone suggested gargling salt water but I don't particularly want to take the risk of chundering (I can't stand salt water) and making the pain even worse than it is now!
Any help appreciated!

I used to get this a couple of time a year when I was a kid, still have my tonsils though!
Bucket loads of Penicillin is was they used to give me, first the banana flavour stuff then that progressed on to Amoxicillin I think...
Gargle with a crushed up aspirin to numb up your throat, no need to swallow it.
Get well soon!

Not wishing to put a downer on you, but are you sure its your tonsils. I used to get viscious cases of toncilitis, but one time I got the pain even worse than before and it was ulcers on my throat not my tonsils. Though if you've been to your GP he would have seen that I guess. Gargling salt water has no effect if it is the tonsils, as it will be a viral infection causing the discomfort, hate to say but apart from that Vicks spray anaesthetic there was nothing else I found to lessen the pain.

I had tonsillitis once about 10 years ago and I don't envy you one bit. ![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
My wife suffers also and she takes penicillin prescribed from our Doc, usually starts feeling easier on day 2/3

I have bouts of that too [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Chel is right, they don't like taking tonsils out nowadays.
They have been considering taking mine out due to the amount of times I have had recurrences of tonsilitis, but are reluctant to go ahead.![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Plenty of rest, plenty of fluids, take whatever the doc gives you and try some throat sweet things.

I've had it since I was 11 and I get a bout of it every year. The Doctor won't prescribe penecillin anymore as he says it's viral. I get my pills from Spain now as they are available over the counter.
My old man said I'll grow out of it.....I'm still waiting.
I reckon it's stress related, I get it every time I read a PSLewis post.

I know how you guys feel - when it hits, it hits bad!
This will sound a bit stupid but Dr Pepper can help.
[Delia Smith mode]
Stick a can in the fridge and let it chill. Once chilled take out, open and drink straight away while it's still fizzy.
This will stop the pain for an hour or so. Once worn off, repeat.

Also try taking those powder Lemsips.
Hope this helps!

I have had this for several years now, the antibiotics are the answer, make sure the doc has predcribed the right ones, I think it is 500mg of penicillin, or else tetracycline or amoxicillin with a smaller dose. Other than that, mega dose on Vit C upto 4000mg a day, completely no alcohol (knocks the **** out of the immune system), and loads of sleep and eat as much as possible.

Englands a weird place! Had it as a kid in the States and had the tonsills whacked out immediately after. In England they just let it keep recurring and making life a misery every now and then ![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)

I used to get four to five bouts of tonsilitis every year during the winter, if you keep bugging your GP they'll eventually take 'em out for you.
The last time I had uncle-bionics for tonsilitis it was take four of these three times a day for two weeks. Got rid of the tonsilitis for a week then back again.
I think they took mine out because they couldn't find a big enough bottle to put all the pills in!!!! ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Thanks for the replies folks, Pete yes it does make u feel like poo, not to mention the enormous lump either side of your neck that causes massive pain running up into your ears.
I hope u and Little Missy are better soon as well!
Apparently there is a bot of an epidemic at the moment. I might send this to my boss so he can see I am not the only one who says it bloody hurts like hell! Thing is I was away for the weekend at a motorbike meeting with the boss and I was drinking and smoking and I was ill while I was there (didnt realise it was tonsilitis as never had it before or I would have come home) and he thought I would be fine for work. Went in Monday and Tuesday but felt very ill but after seeing a different dr she told me to stay off work till next Monday.
I have been prescribed erythromycin (as I am extremely allergic to penecilin and have probably had amoxycilin too many times before) Since the dose was doubled and have been having the anti inflamortories with paracetemol it has worked a little bit for maybe a couple of hours and then the pain comes back with a vengeance!
Have tried lockets by the packet but didnt seem to help! I have heard having them taken out as an adult is an incredibly painful operation and recovery has to be treated with morphine as it is so painful, although it is much less troublesome for children for some reason hence they dont like taking them out in adults.
Think the next step to try and kill the bug off will be a large extremely hot curry, see how it likes that!

chuckster: Because in the USA, the kid's parents would pay for the operation (possibly through Blue Cross) whereas over here, it comes out of the NHS budget which these days, goes mostly to pay for administration & middle management.

Just to say each time I have suffered from Tonsilitus anti biotics have done the trick within 48 hours of first taking them.
Its a mare, like having two red hot lumps of coal in your throat.

bravo, i was 25. i had tonsilitis twice a year and just got fed up with it. the doctor said do it, the consultant said do it and within 3 months i went into the infirmary and was out in a day. the general anaesthetic was a buzz, it didnt hurt that much and i have had absolutely no infections and no problems since ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
in the long run, you know it makes sense.
edited to say morphine not required but im sure thats quite nice as well.

Last time, I suffered rally badly - Couldn't eat, drink or sleep.
They nearly admitted me into hospital.
I also developed a secondary infection in my face, with pustuoles(sp?), etc...Real elephant-man stuff. Trouble is I keep getting re-curring little bouts of this now. My skin recovers after a couple of weeks, but I'm scared that another bout of illness or in my old-age this'll spread like wild-fire!![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Anybody have any clue what it is? Some form of the Streptochoccal(sp?) thing?

Yeah I have heard from a few people now tonsilitis can lead into other things which is why I think I am having the antibiotics to prevent that instead of for the tonsilitis cos i been taking them since monday now and when i woke up this morning it was the worst its been so far so it doesnt seem as thought the antibiotics are helping get rid of it.
Whats also bad is that I cant even get pissed to get rid of the pain cos alcohol makes it even worse! Tonsilits is one evil **** of a germ which i have totally underestimated previously. Hurts like hell, cant drink alcohol to take the pain away, no medication that i have been given seems to be having any long lasting effect and it could go on for maybe 10 days!!! (altho i am really hoping it doesnt last that long or i might just have to do my own tonsilectamy)
Thing is I have got my 4yr old son this weekend and I really dont want him to get it, but at the same time i really want to see him or its another 2 week wait
Can you catch it just from being in the same room or is it more difficult than that like being transmitted by kissing or sneezing etc? I want to do whats best for him obviously and if that means keeping my distance then thats what i will have to do but i really hope i can see him without taking the risk of giving it to him
