Home Cinema Demo Suggestions
#1
For those into the Home Cinema thing, what scenes do you use when showing your system off?
Personally, I like the pre-titles sequence for "Tommorrow Never Dies", and I also think the dog-fight sequence from "Pearl Harbor (sic)" is pretty good.
Any other suggestions?

hmm.. Let me think. Ah!
Jurassic Park: when they leg it from those herd of weird dinos and a t-rex pops out.
Independence Day: the first air to air attack against the aliens.
Star Wars Return of the Jedi(NTSC LD only): The forrest bit on those speedo bikes.
There are many more that i've forgotten though.

I dunno what Shark had in mind, but the lobby scene in The Matrix is great for exercising the sub!
Apocalypse Now - when the choppers are flying in with 'Ride of the valkaries' playing over their speakers - top stuff...
And although it's a dire film, Godzilla has some great sequences for testing your system out...
Edited to say: oh yeah, the scene that sold my system to me was the scene in Terminator 2 where Arnie is shooting at the cops with the mini-gun. Nice.

Saving Private Ryan ... hitting the beach
U571... anything with depth charges
Both should be in DTS mode.
Steve
PS Matrix scene is the one in the lobby.

As previously suggested, the battle scene at the start of Gladiator (love those catapults!) and the helicopter rescue in the Matrix are great. There's also the first time the alien spaceship flies over the Earth at the beginning of Independence Day, which you'll feel in your stomach if you have a decent sub.
I also like the bit just before the subway fight in the Matrix, where the agent twists his neck from side to side - the 'click' in an otherwise silent room is truly sickening on a good system.

I think your front speakers are placed too close together.
Also where did you get those DTS and Dolby Digital signs from. Got a friend that works in your local multiplex?

Dave,
Couldn't afford a new carpet after buying the HC Anyway, wife picks carpet, I pick HC.
Blitz_boy,
Its a funny angle shot, the speakers are actualy 2 metres apart which is wider than recommended by Mission for good imageing. The TV is a 46" Widscreen which fills the gap up. I can't push the left hand speaker any further over as this would mean pushing the sub further in the corner and screwing up the bass.
I spent ages messing with speaker placement and am very happy with it at the moment, still trying to work out a plan to upgrade to ES/EX though, realy strugling to locate another pair or centre rear speaker.
The Signs were from Dolby and DTS web sites, the dolby one is cheap but the DTS worked out at over £60 with postage and tax from the USA, you might do better on ebay or somewhere.
The two pictures on the left are Dolby Digital (Now playing the sound of the future) with the Egyption background, they were free with Home Cinema Choice Magazine.
I also have two 40" X 50" Movie posters (Titanic and Matrix at the moment) in glass frames on the side walls. Posters from Flashbacks Posters
Cheers

Logiclee - what AV amp are you running at the mo?
The new Sony STR555ES thingy looks the dogs....did you read the review in What HiFI? - it finally cracked the Denon off it's top spot.........
Trying to resist.....must resist......
Also sorely tempted by a 42" plasma above the fireplace......saw a nice panansonic one which was cool......must resist.....

Dr Hu,
Its a Sony STRDB930 which most magazines rated the best AV amp under £1000 back in 1999.
I'm still undecided what to go for to get ES/EX 6.1, the 555 was given good reviews in What HiFi but in Home Cinema Choice they said it underachieved and wasn't as good as the STRDB930 which I have now.
I'll have to get some demo's booked I think, whatever I get will have to have DD-EX, DTS-ES 6.1 Matrixed and Discreet as well as Dolby Prologic 2 and DTS Neo6.
I realy rate the Sony 930, at least 4 workmates have bought the same amp after demo's at my house, my Mother and Father in law have also got one. After 3 years of development I would expect to see a vast improvemnt from Sony so I'll give the new one a listen before I make up my mind.
Any suggestions from anyone? budget of around £1000.

My little offering
And another vote for Ronin's car chases and I love the Jurasic Park sequence already mentioned
A great test for your sub has to be Missy Eliot 'Get your freak on'

Thats one mother of a TV - it must be well over 50"
What is it?
Edited to add (and get the topic back on track) that pretty much any scene involving a submarine from U571 (and thats a lot of scenes!)is pretty damn good for both surround and exercising the sub woofer It is one of the best tryout films IMHO.

My offering:
Hard to judge sizes with nothing else on show, but it's a 50" Pioneer Plasma, Denon AVC-10SE, 4x Mission M74, blah.. blah.
Pod racer scene is cool, the intro music to K-Pax is pretty cool too.

David, that's *got* to be the future of TVs or displays. The other half would love that sort of setup, but I fear the price may be a stumbling block
In terms of movies, there's some very good surround on the fast and the furious. Gladiator is excellent - the forest fight scene at the start. Moulin Rouge (USA version) has some nice bits, but the DTS soundtrack seems slightly out of sync so stick to 5.1.

David,
VERY nice ! A dedicated cinema room?
Initally I thought it was going to be a B&O set up (the lighting looking like Lab 4's) Have you seen the now B&O plasma? The Chassis is all panasonic but the sounds are B&O ( I used to install the stuff for a living ) I have a nice wee set up in the bedroom too
Dr. It is a Hitachi, it is -only- 46" IIRC, DD, DTS,progressive scan. Mordant Short 815's with Rodgers Studio 3's at the rear and a set of Pioneer CD mixing decks in the corner for parties (The neighbours dont speak to me alot????? )
