Searching phone numbers

Anyone know how I can find out who 'owns' a phone number?
I've had a number of calls on my mobile (have never left a message) from a number that I don't recognise & would quite like to have an idea about who it might be before attempting to call back.
Is there a website I can check out? Have looked at 192.com, but this doesn't seem to allow you to search on a number, only name & address. The number is a standard landline number.

anyone know if this can be done ? I've got loads of entries on my bill and I don't know who it is. I did of course try phoning but no reply
