He/she's right on the limit of of going to court.
Anything about 25-27 mph over is the limit for issuing a fixed penalty as I understand, 30 mph over and you are definitely up in front of a magistrate.

Depends on the Magistrate.
I got done (all be it on a motorway but it was in Scotland) doing 99.78mph on 70. Got a £300 fine and six points.
If the Magistrate is having a bad day then ya mate might get fed to the Crocs

Makes me feel lucky,
got stopped doing an average 124mph on the m4 over 5 miles.
Had the sinking feeling of the police car following me for a mile before he decided to pull me over.
Got a slap on the wrist and was told not to do it again

I got fixed 3point/£60 penalty for 89 in a 60, but it was by a sneaky **** hiding behind a tree on a long straight country road. If it had been a gatso i'd have been in court! I was lucky!
I know in the eyes of the law I was in the wrong - but in mine and even the copper's opinion it wasnt unsafe due to where it was! Also there was no traffic anywhere in sight which is taken into account - you dont have this aid

Again the 30 mph rule applies, if you are under 30mph over the limit you should escape a ban, but expect 6 points on the licence and minimum £10 per 1mph over the limit fine, plus court costs.

Oooof - Update !
It appears that my mate has received ANOTHER NIP. this time 57 in a 40 and will be getting 60 quid tax and 3 points.
V concerned now cos the road been clocked on (A507) has been a regular route for the last few days and more often than not been over the 40 / 60 limit.
To say that he isn't looking forward to tomorrows post is a bit of an understatement. Only a week ago had never had a single point. It now looks like facing a minimum of 6 and very possibly 9 points and several hundred quid in fines
Has wisely decided to slow down (He says) but I know just how easy it is to have the mph creep up when you are thinking about work etc and you're in a car that can do the rate of knots easily...
I have a Beltronics Euro 330 which is ok for Gatso and Laser but I don't think it covers the frequencies used by mini-gatso's etc.
What do you need to have installed to give you sufficient warning of impending NIP to save your licence ??

Shouldn't be a ban for that!
6 points and £200-300.
Don't mean to **** you off but I was once caught doing 128mph in a 60 zone (******** I know) and got let off. Special circumstances ( I actually lied, but got away with it).

I got speedgunned at an "apparent" peak speed of 67 in a 30 (duel carrageway). My mitigating circumstances were that I had a coach on my right hand side that decided that it was going to wander over to my lane. Quite rude I thought, so I booted it to avoid an accident and then got down to speed.
Went to court, pleaded guilty, explained the circumstances and got 6 points and fine.
Worse day of my life.

I got done for speeding (- 99.7 or so on a dual carriage way) and the copper told me that if you are requested to come to court then you're going to get a ban, as they have to take your licence off you in person, if it comes as optional then you're only going to get points.
I got 6 points and a 40 quid fine - but I was a scabby student at the time

Not so. I've been requested to go to court not once, but twice. First was 90 in a 50 .... 6 points, £1000, second was 99 point something on a motorway .... 5 points, £180.
The first 6 points come off the licence tomorrow!

Plantie - He's not had a date yet, how long does that usually take between NIP and appearance in front of the Beak.
Bros2 - Nice one that the points are coming off tomorrow. Don't do what I did. 3 points off only to get snapped 1 day later - 'nother 3 points

I agree with Bros - if you get summoned to Court its NOT a guaranteed ban. I had to go to Court for 98 in a 60 on the bike but I didn't get banned.
Jods, as far as I know they have up to 6 months after issuing the NIP to issue the Court Summons. Tell your mate to see if his Insurance has Legal Cover - mine did which covered me for the Solicitors Costs (over £400).
Cheers,
Ian.
