Right, I have decided that I would like to treat myself to a nice watch. It has also dawned on me that I know next to nothing about the top quality brands out there.
I have a budget of £1000 to pick myself up something nice. I am not keen on massive chunky watches/leather straps. I am looking for a tastefull silver watch.
I know the main brands are Rolex, Breitling, Omega, Cartier, Tag Heuer etc. What do you have? What brands would you recommend?
Thanks in advance guys.

I was tempted to get a Tag for a while as IMHO they look the dogs bollocks and at that price the main point of choice is looks. In the end I couldnt justify the price tag for a watch I'd wear most days and got a Seiko Kinetic for £330 but If I was buying one it would be a Tag. However Im sure owners on here will give you the lowdown on servicing etc.

Do a search, was a couple of well replied to topics about this last month or maybe in June.
Consider an old watch? For about £600 from ebay you could get a classic Heuer carrera circa 1964. Very classy, classic watch, uses same movement as Omega Speedmaster professional i believe. I should really check that out as i have one of each

Thanks for the pointers guys, I am definatly looking to purchase new and will be shopping in London this Thursday.
Personaly I love the Rolex Explorer II, but I think it is a little out of my price range. I def want a well know brand as I am a 'bit of a tart![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Not got the P1 anymore mate, I sold it and bought a TVR 5.0 Chimera, then traded that for a BMW 328ci, am happy now (or is that for now!?).

If you're going up to town I suggest you call in on Austin Kaye in The Strand (Charing X end). They have a sale on at present too, sell pre-owned watches and vey good deals on new models. Only place I've seen Fortis watches. On Saturday I picked up two lady's gold watches, one dated 1911, the other 1920 with solid gold strap, less than £600 the two. And a new Swiss Army watch for £45 down from £75 (well it had a free compass)

POC,
a lot of the brands you list tend to do big chunky watches nowadays - and ironically the smaller/slimmer they get the more expensive they are.
Breitlings and Rolexs are probably a little out of the price range - TAG is probably a good way to go - but left field - go for something very slim and very light on the wrist - Rado.
If you are up in London - New Bond Street has some good new and old watch shops.
Personally I would find the extra money and get a TAG Monza with leather strap - stonking gorgeous.
Or final left field thought - I found a watch company on the web that does watches to order with faces modelled on dials from classic cars. You tell them what dial and car and they make it up - they were under a grand - really good looking too.

POC,
or you could add a zero to your budget and double it - then you can get a Franck Muller - they are slim and a thing beauty. He also has one of the largest private collections of WRC cars so the money does go to a good cause![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

I've had a couple of TAGs over the years, but these were bought before they became fashionable. Once demand increased they seemed to double on price, almost overnight. Hence, I can't help feeling that they are overpriced fashion accessories. Having said that, they are decent watches and do last.
The reason I'm writing though is to let you know that on my last purchase I managed a small discount, and so would advise you to give them a visit. They're on Regent Street, so if you're gonna be in the area let me know and I'll give you the details.
Happy shopping.

As posted before i have a TAG its the professional 2000 series. This has a small face and silver body and strap. Absolute quality for the money IMHO.
I did not want one of those watches that has a face as big as my head, so thats why i went for this particular TAG.
However, i am saving up for a breitling or an omega.

Hmmm ... a fav subject of mine.
OK, TAG's are trendy but considered by those in the know to be cheap cr@p.
Breitlings are really nice but most are chunky sports jobbies. I had a Breitling but sold it to a friend recently.
If you look at some of the second hand jewellers in London (or any largish city) I am sure you will be able to find something by one of the following - all of which will retain there value and are considered to be top class timekeepers...
Rolex - I have a GMT Master - keeps perfect time (in two zones!)
Jaeger le Coultre
Cartier
Longines (but only the solid gold jobbies)
Omega (ok...ish)
Ebel
Patek Phillipe
Constantine Vacheron
IWC
Piaget
My advice? Go for a second hand Rolex - they can be had for the mney your talking and you can sell it for the same when you've had enough of it (or maybe more)!
Have a look at some of these websites for guidance...

Omega have a new range out which is worth looking at.I noticed it the other day at Meadowhell, looks pretty good.Sort of a cross between a sports watch and a dress watch.Silver with a black dial.
I also remember a watchmaker on here a while ago recommending Omega as reliable and good value.

Just been down to Costco - here are the posh watch prices, all inc. vat.
If anyone can tell me where to better these in the UK then please do. I've found them up to $100 cheaper in the States on the net, but with import duty & insurance etc. you're back to square one.
Ebel Sportwave £751
Omega Seamaster £607
Omega Seamaster Pro £827
Omega Speedmaster Pro £1127
Omega Constellation £704
Longines Oppositiion £458 (there were 2 models - this one has 2 more dials)
Fancying the Ebel or Seamaster Pro meself - whats the diff between the pro and non-pro other than size?
