Quickest way Sheffield to Lake Disttrict Please?
#1
Live SW Sheffield. Needing to get to Workington, on the coast, across from Penrith. Does anyone do a similar journey? Wanting to avoid traffic jams if poss.
Do I do
1)Can get to M67 SE of Manchester in half hour and aim to get there for 7.30am Thru Manc to M602, M60, M61, M6 up to Penrith, then A6 across.
2)M1, A1M to Scotch corner, A66 to Penrith and across.
3)Any other suggestions?
Had both suggested to me. Do I need to go earlier, is the Motorway round Manc a hotspot, if so, any suggestions for how early?? Its work related so will get paid for how ever long it takes, and the mileage, but just want to do it as quick as poss as the passenger is a bit boring
Thanks
Amanda

personally, I would take the following as the M60 can be a bit grim if you follow it round:
A57 - M67 - M60 ( through stockport, but no later than 7.30)- M56-M6-the rest is obvious.
hope this helps
mike.

I should imagine option 2 would be easiest providing there are no accidents........
You will probably just about miss the start of the rush hour through Manchester at that time, but I am not local to there so cannot give you a definite yay or nay.
If it was Birmingham you were travelling through I would have no problem telling you top get through before 7am or find alternative route!!!
So, sorry to be of no help at all

I used to do this run quite often and must have tried every route going. The best way however is M1 onto A1 via handy new link and then A66 all the way across to Workington.

Deffo M1 / A1 / A66. Done it loadsa times and its the best by far.
7.30am around Manchester I find very busy, if you insist on going the Manc route set off an hour earlier.

depends on how u drive
if u do 80mph + all the way go 4 number 1
the problem with number 2 is that u will get b hind a wagon and it will slow u down but this is the best way 4 fuel
leave at 5.30 ish u will not have a problem

Amanda do the M6 north bit, and then do J36 A590 (Barrow), turning right onto the A595, you know the coast road, but at Duddon Bridge take the Corney Fell Road, which brings you out just south of Muncaster, great driving road, so if time and petrol don't matter, it'll make you smile all the way home!!

I live in SW Sheffield - just came back from Scotland today - Avoiding M60:
Dore; Hathersage; Hope; Castleton; Whaley Bridge; Macclesfield; Knutsford (just over 1.5 hours honest). Get on the M6 at junction 19; get off at Penrith and follow Keswick to get to Workington.
Careful with the roadworks and cameras on the way.

Surely you have to do the country road route.
Snake Pass, then M67 > M60 North past Stockport, M66, M65, then A682 up towards Kendal.
Fantastic roads, and a great run.

Living in Cambs & needing to get to Stranraer a few times (via Notts), I've been faced with a simillar query.
My solution & especially @ 05:00 in the morning, is
M1 to Leeds, through Leeds @ onto A65, follow to M6 & then up to Penrith etc.
Reasons? Well, that the A65 is one heck of a road early in the morning, when its empty Traffic, if any, should be Leeds bound down the A65.
I once had a 07:00 ferry from Stranraer & due to courier committments, found myself in Leeds @ 04:00. Bearing in mind that you had to check in at least 30 mins before the ferry departs...
Made it Taking that route & in a Scorpio 4x4

Cheers all
Some interesting replies
Going to be a hard choice especially as I have also had M1 South!! M18, A1M etc given to me as the way to go at that time. The other factor I forgot to mention was being Scoobless for the mo
Could still be quite fun if I took the rally car, but I think my passenger may be a bit nervous, and the thought of spending hours in that loud thing may be too much if I cant drive it properly
Still, got some good options for later.
Chel, ta for map site
Worsley, you must live pretty close then, I'll look out for you. Haven't met anyone from this side of Sheffield yet, can you believe!
