Yep, thought we were being burgled. Just going to sleep and heard the front and back doors make a noise.

I was right at the centre of the one in 2000 (4.2 on the scale) and that woke me in early hours, and scared the crapola out of me, half asleep, whole world shaking and rumbling.
Now I live near an airport, so wouldn't notice one!

Sad facts time...
The big one at 01:00 was 4.8 on the scale, centred 9.6km below Dudley. There was also a magnitude 2.8 aftershock approx 3.5 hours later, again under Dudley.
That takes the sum total of earthquakes in the UK to 10....

I believe those distinctive Malvern Hills in Worcester and Hereford, which are not all that far from Dudley, are the aged remains of Volcano Cores eroded away over many years. There could still be some fault deep in the earth structure well below that area of the West Midlands. Felt it strongly in Gloucester whilst still up watching Baseball on channel 5. The only "American" brand of sport I can enjoy watching. Sounded t first like a large Lorry passing by - not unusual at 0100 hrs locally - then I lurched forward in my chair towards the TV about six inches mild whiplash - rather like being lightly rear end shunted in your car. Previous quakes I've slept through no bother ...

MGJohn,
Strange that you had a big shunt rather than fast vibration. We had what can only be described as a fast vibration (shake) at about 3 - 5 shakes a second. Seems that is what everyone else I've spoken to today also had. I'm in Malvern (well as near as damnit).
Malvern Hills volcanos ? No, deffo not. It is a fault based system, actually known as a monocline. Nothing to do with volcanos, but lots to do with forced uplift.
Cheers
