Spent 4 years at university, as a "student".

I paid the privelidge, last year cost me about £7k.

Now looking at my payslip, I still seem to be paying the taxman an unreal amount of money.

And people in my line of work complain there aren't enough quality graduates, I wonder why?

Back on topic, I did wonder what the tube drivers were complaining about, okay so it's maybe not a stellar job, but I've had a pay freeze for 18 months (and gonna be 2 years at this rate).

Sorry, no sympathy, it's been spent on the fireman, health workers and teachers, none left.

Yeah Pavlo, i sympathise here.

I worked for Fords when i left school from 1985 to 1993
and enjoyed annual payrises and union backing.

Here in an office environment, the minute you complain financially, you get outed or called a troublemaker.

Unions did good and bad, but 33K for driving down a track.
God, you dont even have to go left, right or backwards!!!!

Makes a mockery of me going through a 4 year technician apprenticeship, getting lots of qualifications and having 20 ppl working for me for a paltry £22K.

They earn a little over £31k a year for a guaranteed 35-hour week, anything more is overtime of course, plus and this is the biggie, 42 days paid holiday a year.........

Station staff are in the Mid £20k with the same leave.

As for responsibility, remember that when they have wedged enough of us in their you are looking at between 400-700 people on each train, it is a large chunk of pressure when you have that many lives in your hands.

Reffro.. and the pressure is what? Push the lever, pull the lever and stop at the red light.. Mind, you could be right, because those reds cause quite a few problems for train drivers.... Always makes me mad that.. Train goes through a red light and very little seems to happen.. If a coach driver was caught doing the same with a vehicle full of passengers I'm guessing he'd be lucky to keep his license/ livelihood.

I'm lucky not having to tube it now, but i do remember the days.

Plus, if they get a kamikaze commuter jump in front of them, they get a year off or something equally as ridiculous!!!

When some one does jump or fall infront of the train the driver get a perfect view of the accident in the full knowledge that he can't swerve the train or brake in time and has to wait for the squishing to happen. Its not nice, and it will be pretty much unavoidable, so give them a break on that count.

As for the ease of the job, yes being sat there in their cab driving their train does look easy, but that's after they have learnt how to control the train along with all the other safety signal information etc etc that they learn and have to know. I for one thought that looks easy when I'm stood on the platform waiting for the tube, but I'm sure we are underestimating what the job entails.

But what I do have a gripe with is the fact they get 42 days paid leave, only do 35 hrs a week, plus they have plenty of overtime, bank holidays in lieu, and still get paid £31k BASIC (with overtime its got to be closer to £40-45k for most), its hard to keep my sympathy taking that into account. Oh I did also forget free transport for themselves and I think they get subsidies for their families. Don't quote me on everything above but I'm not far away, as I was looking into applying for one of these jobs at one time. Oh and just think of that wonderful public sector final salary pension............

Passing a red light while driving a train is called a SPAD:
Signal Passed At Danger. Each one is logged and goes on the drivers record..that's IF he gets away with his life. Don't forget the ones caused by signals changing to danger as the train approaches and he CAN'T stop b4 going past it. JUST past is a SPAD. And railway signals don't always obey a set pattern like our traffic lights!
Too many (I don't know how many), and he's suspended pending investigation, could lose his job etc. Don't forget that his mistake could potentially cost more lives than even a coach full. Doesn't bare thinking about.
I've also thought of this sort of job, and I think the utter boredom, but HAVING to keep your concentration, would do for most of us on here.
Anyway, I don't think that others' poor salaries is an excuse for paying ANYONE else badly. Give 'em £33000, and take it from the REAL thieves out there: the fat cats that get paid £3 million to resign from a company/organisation they've totally fukced up!!

I'd say they're worth no more than lorry drivers and we all know they don't earn good money. I'd say £25,000 + overtime MAX and they should think themselves lucky at that wage.

I have worked my way up in my company (now on the 3rd floor)
To management and to think I could have spent 3 months training to drive a Tube Train instead of 17yrs to get similar money
I wish I only did 35hrs a week, mine is more like 60hrs with no overtime.[img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

I've been out of school for 5 years. I've got a BA in History, and I'm pulling down $86,000/yr. I'm not bragging, that's typical.

If they go on strike, sack 'em all. Waste of space. Plenty would be glad to take their place, and it doesn't take much skill or intelligence. Don't Victoria Line trains only have driver's cabs so as not to frighten people who don't like the idea of a driverless train? Fcuked my day up as well. Their pay and benefits are unbelievable for what they do. If I see one on the platform tomorrow I may well push the ****** onto the live rail.

I'd use it. 94 octane from the States is roughly the same as 98 octane over here. Our octane rating is RON, they use (RON+MON)/2.

I got conned into working in the Health Service many years ago and it took me 6 years post A levels to qualify for anything above basic grade, and I'm proud to say that it can't be done any quicker. At 56 years old I'm on £25 pa. If I get it wrong someone gets an operation they didn't need or doesn't get one they did, and if one of my people gets it wrong it's still my fault. When I started I could square it off against security and a decent pension but in these days of commercialisation of medicine and the compensation/blame culture that doesn't work anymore. The other thing I have a prblem with ATM is the insidious rise of the political correctness lunacy in all its forms. I know several people who have lost their jobs through unsubstantiated allegations of sexual or racial harrassment, there is no defense, you are guilty until proved innocent. Promotion prospects are zero, pay rises are a joke, workload increases are only exceeded by the staff losses and recruitment problems, what sort of graduate can you attract with a basic rate of £12k a year?
