Which probably means everyone else knows about it just did not tell me!
OK
you are listening to a piece of music (say in the car)you like it and you want to find out the record/artist.
key in the following 2580
hit call/send
the phone will connect for 10-20 or so seconds.
It then hangs up
you get a text message with the details
Cool!
It does cost `.50p mind but a neat trick

the sound engineer who told me about this recons it ids software based and compare frequencies/patterns in the sample it takes to match up with the tracks stored on a database - my eyes glazed over at this point and i wondered off, similar system to voice recognition i seem to remember.
Most sound engineers i know are very **** about these sorts of things and can bore for Britian!

Surely they must have a fairly limited database of tracks though? Do you think it could identify anything interesting, or are we talking current to 20 only?

It works, and the technology is, indeed, as described above (by Paul H, not by bashful ).
They've got a database of 1.5 million tracks already - particularly latest hits. Since each song simply requires an electronic 'checksum' which can be generated as quickly as it takes to rip from CD, I expect they'll have most songs ever published, soon!
More details from the people who invented the service, Shazam.

Just tried in with a CD in the car - worked no problems! Put the track on, dialled the number, listen to the little message and hold your phone up for 15-30 seconds - literally within 5 seconds there was a text message with the track/artist details! This is very
If it is a scam, then it's a very good one! Pretty sure there are easier ways of getting a hold of mobile phone details than setting up a database of 1.5m songs and the ability to recognise them over a mobile!

I must be approaching this the wrong way.
If its a cd and I want to know the track -
1. I bought it and should know who it is.
2. I read the disc or cover.
If its the radio I wait for the DJ to tell me who the track was.
Cool - am I old fashioned or what
Alas

Also never realised that if a fighter jet flies over the car at just the point the DJ announces the artist, I might not hear it.
Then I would probably go into a downward spiral, lose all sense of self worth and start talking to other people on BBS's instead of real life. Oooooops

I work for the company that provides the music and IT infrastructure for this project. I can assure you this database is HUGE and will eventually encompass so many songs the chances of finding one it doesn't have are tiny. As an example the chances are you couldn't pick up a cd from a big HMV and find a song it doesn't have.
edited to say I have even seen them ripping obscure spainsh latin music cd's.

Amazed.
Just had a go at catching it out. It recognized "New York Telephone Conversation" by Lou Reed. Then it recognized "Lonely, Lovely and Loaded" by Corduroy. And the particularly excellent be-bop jazz version of "Windmills of your Mind" by Oscar Peterson was no problem.
Gonna phone CrisPDuk, he's got some real obscure stuff.

Well it's never heard of 'Jug Head Boogie' by Art Hodes, or 'Aunt Hagar's Blues' by Art Tatum. Poor set-up if you ask me
