I Want To Open A Fish & Chip Shop......
#1
I'm an Engineer and am gradually getting more and more fed up with cutbacks, red tape (American Company) and the fact that I'm putting money in other peoples pockets on the back of my talents.
I've always had a desire to open a fish and chip shop but never had the ***** to do it. It strikes me that there must be plenty of money to be made as I'm not afraid of hard work.
Anybody out there had any experience of this trade who is willing to share some tips as to the best way to go about this.
Cheers

Mate's Dad had one for years. retired at 45
Tip: Find the sh1tt1est council estate near you, set up right in the middle, and make sure you're open 12 till 8pm. Sure fire winner especially if you deep fry everything

How about a mobile van? There is one near us who has an agreement with a local publican, he parks in the pub car park and does a killing trade from tea time right up to closing time.

Stafford could do with a few good chip shops as most of them are crap (last time I lived thier five years ago). From memory though the council estate already has one in the middle.
Do a bit of research first but you will be amazed how far people will travel for a good chip shop.
Example I have two near me that are crap but prefer to go to the chip shop about 5 miles down the road. You should see the queue of a weekend.

Agree with SiCotty
We have a chippy aobut 500 yds away, the nearest good one is 3 miles away - we would rather travel and get good food, same for any takeaways really

My top tip would be to find some decent recipes. You always go back to a good chippie that serves good chips and nice batter. Also chuck in freebies to your regulars e.g. mushy peas or an extra sausage (if you bought 5 already).
Bah now Im gonna have to pop down the chippy for dinner as youve made me well hungry
For anyone whose in Cambridge try Jaws Fish Bar just passed Tesco's in Milton - well recommended.
Simon.

Talk to your local planning authority as it can be difficult to get suitable and acceptable chip-shop sites given that they can have huge impacts on residential amenities.

Positioning is the key, chippy at the end of our road is crap, but must make a fortune, it's on the edge of a council estate, across the road from the pub, in the center of the villagey bit, and is on the road everyone from school walks down. Always seems to be busy, despite the crapness

LOL at you lot, travelling 3 miles etc to find a "GOOD" chippy.
News for you guys: You'll have to go further than that. To get really good FISH, you need to be within 30 miles of the port it comes in at. Ask any Trawlerman.
I was born in Cleethorpes (someone has to be), and Grimsby is right next door.................

I agree with Saxo Boy......it can be hellish to get permission through local planners for Fish & Chip shops, due to smell, noise, parking & vehicular access, late night openings & litter. Many are rejected or fought against tooth & nail by local 'posh' residents.
Just so you know........
But if you want to do ...then do it....you're only here once.... make a killing too I reckon..... might have to fight off the greeks (or is it cypriots) who seem to be the Fish & Chip shop mafiosa in the UK
all the above IMHO, meant to cause no offence to any person, race, minority etc living or dead, any similarity to persons living or dead is purely coincidental blah blah.....

Dont forget to add some powdered monosodium-glutamate (flavour enhancer) to the barrels that are used to store the chips prior to frying. This is the same gear that is added to food you get at the chinese takeaway. This is the gear that gives you a shocking headache. But it makes the food taste great and makes the customers keep coming back for more of the same hence why you never see a chinese takeaway or chipshop go out of business!

You could get your Scooby converted to run on all your used chip fat and have free car fuel for life!! this is true, it can be done, but you have to admit it to the taxman and pay tax on it (yeah right ).
