Just put some insulating tape around it to stop the excess light escaping. You'll be fine.

There are two types to my knowledge: Toslink, and Mini toslink. The first is about 4mm square with the top corners "knocked off", and the second one is more like a mini jack plug.
Dixons/Comet/Curry's will advise.

Make sure you take the little clear cover off, not that anyone would fall for that one , certainly not me

There are indeed two types (annoyingly !).
Have a look at Maplin's website for the appropriate cables.
