Hope your chainrings and cassette are ok to mate?
I have a chain stretch checker and use it. Swapping my chain before it gets to knackered saves a fortune in other components. Especially when you have Race Face chain rings etc.

Still works just lost 3 gears in effect.

MooseRacer - thats the problem! How much for a chain versus RF rings..?
Better to keep the chain fresh and change the rest of the kit less often IMO

Marin Nail Trail will be 00 spec.
Upgraded front to XT already. Better rubber/wheels, gear leavers.
Strip it down every 3-4weeks and make sure its all running right.
Do well over 100miles a week

You're a good lad giving it a full service every 3-4 weeks
100 miles a week is enthusiastic
I am very lazy these days and manage about 30-40miles...

The bit you've bust is a sprocket off of a Shimano cassette.
Do you have a chain whip (ooh-er missus), and a Shimano cassette removal tool? The cassette removal tool costs about £5 -buy a good one, and a chain whip can be made for pennies if you've any old bits of chain. There's a good piccy of one in the Haynes book of the bike.
Once you've got the cassette off, you MAY be able to buy just the sprocket you need. Try Madison Cycles,(0208 385 3385) the Shimano importer, and they'll tell you if it's available, and how much, then just order through a `local dealer.
They'll want to know what groupset it came off, how many speeds, and the identification mark off the cassette.
If all this is too much/too slow, I agree: Chain Reactin or Woolly Hat Shop, both excellent mail order outlets, I've used both, and they're about the same.

Hey Guys..Just had 2 full on days at the Cycle shoe in London.Well good. Thank god they are not selling stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would have come out with bags of stuff. Managed to blag a few "Sram" things. One been a new 9 speed powerglide 9 and chain.!! If I did not need it You could have it........
How come no one has mentioned NOT using Shimano chain /cassette. They are krap. "SRAM" walk over them all day long.
Had a go on a new "Lightspeed" complete with "USE" anti dive lefty fork.... Very nice but no adjustable damping on the go.
If you can get to London Today/Tomprrow you should go. Islington.
Can give a few trade tickets and press ones if needed!!

Why did it just break? Hmmm, probably the same reason that my eldest managed to do a similar job on a Hope rear disc: too much force!!
The XT cassette is pretty good, I've got one, and it has done well for me. Don't forget that XT is 27 speed (9 sprockets). Is the one you're using now? If not, it's not completely compatible.
SRAM? their chains are OK. That says it all really:
Setting up:
Set top and bottom limits on their respective screws by sighting along the line from cassette to bottom jockey wheel on your mech. Push the mech across by hand, don't rely on the shifter.
Put your cable in place, make sure it's tight.
Now hang the bike up, or turn it over so that you can wind the pedals forwards without it going anywhere.
adjust the tension on the cable, tightening it about a half turn at a time, until the gear changes smoothly from 2nd to 3rd sprocket (counting from the small end), when you click the shifter.
If it doesn't change easily and without noise, tighten another half turn (anti-clockwise). If it goes too far, or still makes a noise after the shift, slacken by one half turn.
Now try all your gears, from bottom to top.
repeat if they're not smooth. If you can't get largest sprocket, loosen the "low" stop screw a bit. If you can't get smallest sprocket, the same with "high" screw.
Remember you'll have to redo it after a few rides to take up slack after the cable stretches, if you used a new cable.
ALWAYS user genuine Shimano, or Clarks STAINLESS cables, grease 'em well before fitting, and try to keep 'em clean.
Hope this is of help.

Si,
Broken a few sprockets in my time, usually just down to wear and tear and dropping the cassette onto rocks while still on the bike
100+ miles a week ? I'm guessing they are road miles though ?
I reckon yours broke because you cleaned it too much. Me ? I'll chuck a bucket of water at mine once every six months and maybe let it sniff my can of GT85.
Luke,
I didn't go because I knew I would place orders for stuff I don't need Sram stuff is nice, always prefered over Shim stuff. You still being gay and using gears ?
Cheers
Ian
