Right, I know I will get grief for this but I _really_ am asking this for a friend As I used to be a health and fitness fanatic, I still get gym and nutrition questions asked me by friend, colleagues, family.
Today someone asked me about those kits you can buy where you stick the pads on and plug 'em in and they cause the muscles to contract. They wanted to know if they actually work?
I have never tried them and know nothing about them.
What does anyone know about them?
Cheers
Matt

Hey Katana, not seen you posting round here for a bit? You been lurking in other forums?
I have never been a believer in shortcuts, machines, pills and potions. Hard physical graft and sensible diet is the only way I am convinced.
It intrigues me how so many companies "build big muscles fast" etc get away with such aggresive marketing.
Want to hear from people with experience of these muscle stimulators. Come on, don't be shy

Hehe nah I've been busy in the summer with my resits and personal life. Anyway I've tried it and wasn't that impressed with it. I get more "burn" from bench pressing than using the pads on the chest. Using the pads is akin to doing 1000 bench presses using a 10 lbs weight. You'll get tired but you won't gain in size.
edit : its best to use it after a workout.

They do stimulate the muscle, but not to the same degree that actual excercise will!
They were developed to help injured sports people get a head-start with repair to muscle and regaining muscle strength.
As I said in an earlier thread: if you want to have definition, you have to 1st shift that fat! You can have a perfect 6 pack, but if there's a big layer of lard over the top of it no-one can idmire it!

the machines do what they say and contract the muscle, there are some areas that are just to large (chest, quads) for this to be effectve on but other parts can work (abbs, calfs, forearms, etc)
the problem with them is that to induce overload on the area you need it on REAL high, i used an EMS kit on my calfs for 2 years while training and got more gains than from doing weights o that area. However, i had the kit running on max and it was VERY painfull (just like a proper exercise) so dont bother using it to avoid the pain/burn.
in summary if you have a stuburn area to work on then try it but make sure you are working (dont be fooled by the adds that show you watching tv while having a work out, i couldnt walk for 10 mins after i used mine)
T
ps- there are no shortcut type ppl are sooooo wrong. the body is a machine and so there are a variety of shortcut/enhancemnents you can use just like sticking Nos on a car!
most pills/powders work in the right context the problem is ppl who dot need them use them and moan, its like putting optimax in a saxo and saying its still slow.

Thanks for the insight Tiggs, that is the kind of answer I was looking for. Defo will not be suitable for the person who asked me about this as they are a couch potatoe looking for a no effort, no discomfort easy substitute to the gym.
Interesting how the reality differs somewhat from the marketing hype

I've used these fancy electro type machines and wasn't impressed. The bottom line is to get benefit you have to turn them up pretty high which means you can't do anything else. In other words you can spend 30 mins getting electrocuted and looking like a pr1ck every time the pulse comes on on, or you can got to the gym for 30 mins, maybe see some nice birds and probably get a better work out anyway

gary,
what i meant was that for someone who is already excersing then most of the pills, powders, etc do have some benifit (thus they act as a shortcut)
the problem comes from some lard **** going to health food shop and buying a tub of protein powder then wondering why he's still a fat bloke...he than slags of protein powder, etc.

Tiggs, Gary, I think you are both correct.
The difference is that using "supplements" in addition to regualr training is not a shortcut, but just that - a "supplement".
Saxo - Thought the Optimax comment would draw you out

I have the ab belt and the shorts and they do work as long as you continually use them. If I don't use them for a week or so I can see a difference and as I haven't had them out of the drawer for a few weeks now I am not quite as fit looking as I used to be !!
I highly recommend them but you have to keep using them. the gym would be better though but I just don't have the time unfortunately.

Afraid you're kidding yourself....stomach muscles will NOT lose their tone in 7 days (in fact you could completely immobilise muscles for a week, and you would only get minimal muscle wastage)

Seriously within 7 days you will see a difference and that is why in the instructions it tells you to keep using it to keep the effects!
There is no way I am putting a pic up with me using them!

I don't have any pics of me using my belt and shorts but on my website you can see the effects on the second page down and also on the main background pic!

Ha ha AJ, I win....told you it was a guy
Maybe water retention/swelling (or something like that) is the key to the 7 days debate. I used to go to the gym 3-4 times a week before I fecked my shoulder and had got myself up to a half decent size However when I stopped going my muscles did shrink a little within 7 days. Critically though, they became softer which suggests that the actual tissue didn't degrade but rather they lost something else (i suspect fluid). 3 months on they are all but gone
