I did this last year and have a Tosh TV, DVD, Denon amp, CD players, Sky and Xbox all now in glorious DTS or 5.1.
I use Mordaunt Shorts at the front and middle, and Boston Accoustics at the rear. The MS's have enough bass on them so i dont need a sub. I got the lot from Richer Sounds (apart from the telly)
Be prepared to spend money on good cables as mentioned above.

Having got some serious home entertainment gear now such as DVD recorder, big telly , etc, I now need to set it up properly. Everything is Dolby 5.1 compatible, my question is what do I need to get the best out of the setup? Do I need an Amplifier or Reciever or what?
Basically ,what do I need for Dolby surround sound????
Any response appreciated, even to tell me of your setup.
Cheers,
Craig.

I've just bought a Yamaha DSP AX620 (reduced from £4-500 to £150 in Currys
It's got basically everything but the kitchen sink (and THX, receiver and ProLogic2 )
Well impressed.
Using the DVD as a CD player, Mission speakers for the front L&R, Toshiba satellite speakers (came with TV) for the rear L&R, Gale reference Active Sub and a Gale Cente speaker.
DTS system on the cheap!
Just looking forward to Star Wars Episode 2 to be released to really try it out! Until then, I'm gonna keep playing to get it right
Best of luck,
Dan

Has your dvd got a dolby digital decoder built in to the player?? If so you only really need an amp, if it hasn't you need a processor to decode the digital signal most processors have an amp built in i think.Dont take that as gospel though. Ive got a big toshiba tv and its got a processor built in so i dont need a amp/reciever. hope thats of some help just say if you want any more questions.

Get yourself the best you can afford you dont want to waste your money on crap with that tv. A sony STR-VA555ES reciever for about £800 and a decent speaker package like missions FS2-AV for about £370 then just get some decent cables to connect it all up,both the product have been best buys in what hi-fi so you cant go wrong for just over a grand. Hope that helps a bit or gives you an idea.

Craig,
I'm right in the middle of this as well.
Seems the only difference between an AV receiver and an AV Amplifier is that a receiver also has a radio tuner (from what I can tell).
Seems to be loads of different ones but they all seem to do Dolby Digital 5.1. The only thing you need to watch is that it has the right inputs (from your DVD) and right outputs (speakers). Everything else seems to be additional features, power, name, toys.
As someone has said, I'm off down to Richer Sounds first
I need speakers too...
Cheers

Ive got:
Sony FQ75 32" Art Couture WEGA TV with all the toys
Sony DAV-S880 Home cinema DVD system with 5.1 and everything else imaginable
KEF Bookshelf speakers to replace the weakish Sony rears for the 5.1 (these rock)
I did have Marrantz + Arcam before but sold it as was getting on, the Sony system deliveres awesome home cinema with amazing sound for £600 have a look on www.techtronics.com
And as its all one package its tested together so theres minimal configuration or balance adjustment, I love it! 10/10

I have been looking at the spec for my TV as I was confused as to why they would sell a TV with a full satellite speaker system if it couldn't do surround sound out of the box. The spec says it has a built in Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder. Does this mean that I don't need a seperate AV amplifier/Receiver? If so, why can I not appear to get surround sound with my DVD player or from TV programs that have the Dolby logo shown at the beginning?
I'm a bit confused as to what my limitations are with my gear as it is not cheap stuff!!!!!!
Before anybody mentions it, the TV is setup via the onscreen menu to transmit dolby 5.1 but it appears not to do so.
Any more help would be appreciated,
Cheers,
Craig.
P.S. Has any body got the same TV as me? Toshiba 32ZP18P. How is yours setup?

The .1 of 5.1 or 6.1 refers to the sub signal encoding. Your 5 speakers will not be receiving this info. Go and get a sub M8, you won't believe the difference.
Craigfin, how does the decoder in the tv receive the sound signal from the dvd?

Latest edition of what hi-fi has seperate guide to buying and setting up home cinema. Personally I'd say use seperate surround amp and complete set of matched speakers as your tv ones will not do the sound of dvd justice. Also where possible get DVD's with DTS surround as having compared it with normal Dolby digital it is so much better.
Cheers.

I'm in the same boat as Craig, i.e. trying to find my way through the confusion that is home cinema.
Anyway, after lots of travelling about to look at kit and even more comparing of prices, I ordered a Sony STRVA555ES receiver that has everything I need. The sound from it is just excellent.
Initially looked at getting it from the Sony Centre where I demo'ed it, but they wanted £1k for it so had to shop about.
One of the best prices I got was from HotKit and you can actually speak to a human first (but still have to order online). I cannot give this company enough praise. Top service, delivery faster than going to a shop and getting it yourself and very good prices. paid £750 for it and it is a genuine UK model, not a grey. Worth a look if you are shopping for AV/HiFi stuff.
Just got to sort my speakers out next.....
Cheers
