Autopsy - Who's going to watch it
#1
Footage of the first public Autopsy since 1830 will be shown on C4 at 11:45-00:40.
I don't know if I want to watch it or not. Part of me thinks it'll be fascinating, another very gross.

I won't be able to watch it 'cos there's a good chance I'll still be here in the office then, and I don't have a telly here.

I watched it. Well, the first 15-20 minutes (i.e., until they'd removed the guy's innards and brain).
What a total bloody cop-out by Ch4. 80% of the time the camera was on the crowd or Dr. Whatshisname's face, and 19% of the time she shots were wide-angled and distance shots. None of the interesting or educational bits (such as peeling back the skin on the skull or cutting the skull open) were actually shown at all.
It's a shame, 'cos other than the Dr's daft hat, it was done quite well. The english doctor giving commentary was very good. It was just a shame Ch4 copped out and didn't actually show any significant footage of the autopsy itself.

It was lame! I watched it and was totally disappointed that they didn't show any of the stuff MarkO has already mentioned. I thought we were gonna be shown the full works, not just cutting the brain and heart into bits. I wanted to see the opening of the head and inside the torso as they removed the organs etc etc. Total waste of time

Oh, and (obviously) the body had been chemically 'set', meaning it looked more like a movie prop than a real thing. Anyone who thought the scenes were disturbing probably hasn't watched a movie with a PG certificate or higher in the last 30 years.

Exactly the body was also old IIRC and had been treated and frozen for ages. The skin when they cut it was so tough and rigid it wasnt realistic at all. There was no fluids, no smell or anything, it had been totally setup for an audience and took away the realism of a proper autopsy

I think that's a little unfair. It was a research autopsy, so the body would have been in that state normally. After rigor mortis has set in most of the liquid (blood, in particular) will also clot and solidify, especially if the body's been chemically fixed.
Were you expecting blood to come gushing out when he made the incision?!

MarkO not at all but one of the scientists that was on the panel, the old git who didn't agree with it kept saying its not very realistic at all, there would normally be very foul smells and a lot of fluid, not blood but fluid inside the cavities etc. This body was basically sterilised for the audience's sake.
I was obviously expecting a little too much, I really did think with all the explicit warnings ch4 was giving that it was going to be a lot more detailed than it actually was.

I found it the most interesting TV I'd seen for a long time.. some of the editing was poor.. Perhaps they should air a more complete version now.. As for gore, I'm not sure I could have watched if the blood looked like blood...

I actually have found animal hospital more sickly than that Seeing an animal with a deep open wound and lots of blood is far more sickening to me than seeing a prep'd dead body that looks more like a film prop.
And no I wasnt watching it for the gore, I was expecting gore but actually wanted to see inside the head and torso etc for learning what they actually see and what its actually like in there.

"Police and coroners' officials are to prepare a report for prosecutors after the professor behind the Bodyworlds exhibition conducted the first public autopsy in London for 170 years.
Officers who attended the dissection of a German man by Gunther von Hagens in an east London art gallery will pass their file to the Crown Prosecution Service who will consider whether to press charges. "

I watched it - thought it was quite interesting. Did you see the size of the liver? It's massive. Didn't put me off my scotch though. I agree that the editing was cr*p, but overall i thought it was worth watching.

thought it could have been done better - interesting though - i think that the good that came from the programme was highlighted by the lady guest they had on it. she shared my view, that is that the programme helped to de-mystify the whole death scenario.
don't expect that anyone who watched it would now be that squeamish if they were confronted by a dead body - or not?
