Company I work for is obsessed by two things. Enviromental issues and the working time directive. I have for past 18 months been signing a disclaimer type form saying I dont mind working over 60 hours. Then this dropped to 55 hours. Now its down in Jan to 48 hours. Where will it stop.
I know it was brought in to stop sweat shops exploiting their workers but surely if ppl want to earn an extra load of cash and will do so without being forced then whats the problem.
I work for a huge company and they try to enforce the law. People who own small sweatshop type operations dont give a toss anyway so will continue to force their staff to work very long hours.
Chip.

I used to work 84 hours one week, none the next.
Most of the time 60 or so hours overtime was available in those weeks off, so usually - due to sickness or absenteeism, several, including myself took the opportunity to do it - so an average of 70 hours a week per person was pretty average.

In 1990 I worked 132 hours a week as a juniour Dr for £2.38 an hour.
Now as a Consultant I am paid for 35 hours a week.
I earn as much as a head teacher working the same hours!
I actually work 70 to 80 hours a week as my juniour Dr are protected by working time directives and work 55 hours a week.
Oh for a time machine
There is only so much compensation in terms of job related perks i.e. working with young nurses that can keep me in my job

Know what you mean about working time directive, I have found my basic salary going up 10% a year, and yet my total earnings dropping slightly for the last few years. We are now being capped to average 45 as, according to some boss or another, 45 means 48. Oh, and you're not allowed to work overtime just 'cos the customer asks for you to, offers to pay for it, and you're happy to do so. No, we have an overtime budget to keep to now, decided by someone who has never done the job. Perfectly sensible. Time for a new job, methinks.

Screwing up and then fixing my PC - 177 hours
I'm usually in the office from 8ish to 6ish Mon-Fri.
It's a different matter if I'm productive in all those hours
