Combined DVD & Video Players

One of my friends has one of these.
Totally unimpressed with it. If space is an issue and you have to get one at least try to get it multi-region.
I think his one is by Sharp. If you have kids and the youngest decides the video slot is a good place for barbie accessories you're in trouble.
Having said that, it was easy[ish] to connect my camcorder and let him watch some karate footage.

I,ve just purchased a Panasonic NVVHD1BS for my parents following an excellent review in home cinema magazine. No personal experience though. You can find it at appliance direct for £267.

I bought the JVC one when our old video machine packed up about 12 months ago. This unit simply works. You can record like normal to tape (with VideoPlus, PDC) and the DVD side works fine and gives a good picture. The SCART socket is RGB enabled for better picture on DVDs etc.
It works for us (as we had limited shelf space at the time) and hasn't messed up once.
Oh, and you can watch DVDs while the video is recording.
