Don't give dogs cooked bone because that shatters too easily.
Relatively fresh bone is a lot harder to shatter.

Bones worked for my pooch.

She used to chew the fukcing house up if left for 5 minutes, until a colleague suggested bones.

Et voilla - no more chewed up carpet, skirting boards, shoes, etc.............

Get another pup I'm serious.
I did (English Springer Spaniels - compete nutters)
It's no more of a effort, cause you're already catering for one.
Couldn't be without 2 now

Our first ever dog was a black lab. 'Duke'.

I'm getting an OES in Jan - absolutely beautiful!

To control howling I think you need to give them increasingly longer periods of being alone. When my pup comes, he'll have full attention initially and a few days off work (me). Then leave him for half an hour as you tinker with the car etc, and build it up from there.

At what age did you have the pup? Rem,ember they are used to lots of mates and company until this point.

here's what you do:

buy her a smoked bone (you can get them from any decent pet/horse supply place). they last ages, cost £1.50 each and dogs absolutely adore them: it'll keep her occupied and as to the howling, it usually stops after a week or so, faster if her mouth's full. it's just mother/litter separation anxiety.

we also have a black lab bitch, now two years old: this approach sorted her out in four days when she was a pup. you just have to ignore the yaroooos, which isn't always easy.

she still loves the smoked bones and gets through one a month.

good luck.

Cool

12-bore should do it, although the volume of the howling might actually increase momentarily.

She's lonely and confused. She's being left all alone and doesn't know why. Howling is a method that dogs and wolves use for calling the pack together.

It may be an idea to get a cuddly toy and put one of your old jumpers on it, just to give her something to snuggle up with and a familiar scent.

Labs, depending on the breeding, very active dogs, and warrant attention.

My dog Guinness has always been allowed to follow my wife everywhere through out the day since he was a pup. However, we do not allow him upstairs. He has never been a problem, as i belive he already gets enough attention during the day.

A work colleague has his litter brother, and was left on is own (out of sight) for too long as a pup, and has been a little barsteward from day 1.

I would suggest taking her with you to your office, and making her stay in a basket there, then progressively splitting the time between downstairs and upstairs.

I think labs are a dog that needs to know where you are, not bothered about seeing you. So if she can see where you are going, then over time she will not be as bothered.

As she gets older, she will (hopefully) become aware of the fact that she does not need your 100% attention.

aikitas arent they those terrifying big japanese dogs?

Mini daschunds for me (x3) and I still cant spell it.

Stop howling by ignoring it. If you keep going back it will reinforce the behaviour. She'll soon stop.

Don't give your dog a bone, so many people think that thay are good for them but they are not! I lost count with the amount of dogs brought into work with bits of broken bone stuck somewhere in their mouths or even worse still damaging elsewhere

My dog used to howl constantly until I came back from work and it would drive my folks mad! One of my dogs used to sleep every night on my dads shirt! Maybe something to snuggle into would be a good idea that is whoever the pup plays with the most.

Oh and I'm a vet nurse

You need to build your dog's confidence up so that it is happy and content in the knowledge that you will be coming back sooner or later.

The best way to do this is to slowly build up the time you leave it alone. Start at a couple of minutes only and slowly, slowly build it up.

You might feel a bit daft doing it, but gradually build it up 5,10,15minutes etc. You will get there in the end.

Sorry to go a little off topic (but the answer is given I hope), but G I was very much after an Akita recently. Went to see some lovely ones in Newmarket. Fantastic looking dogs, but very weary of us initially. They soon warmed up though and the big un was mates and nuzzling me by the end. The pup however (12 weeks) was so aloof and distant. No sense of fun or mischief - just wanted to get away from us. This killed it a bit as that was like no pup of any breed I have ever met. Pups are normally boisterous, fun and inquisitive. These Akitas had a great home and were looked after beautifully by a ridiculously dedicated mother and daughter.

WE went on another day to see some OES, and there was no comparison in temparemnt. Fun, approachable and in your face mischief and so friendly. (Yes we're getting one - both parents and grandparents champions and stunning!)

I know Akitas are very different to OES, but I was still hoping to get one - dogs act often behave depending on how you 'raise' them after all...

Still its a majestic strong dog who would have any nasty Pit Bull for breakfast , and protect your kids whilst doing it (let alone snack on those that say 'slap it')! Not for me though unf... Would love to get your opinion...

nice to see you like the breed i have a dog and a bitch and my mum also has the same my bitch has always been a bit of a handful very giddy and playful but my dog is the other way . im a soilder and when i go away i never worry about the wife as the two babys take good care of her there so loyal to us and to be honest i dont think i could love em anymore or repay them for everything they have done for me i wont ever have a diferent breed dont get me wrong this breed is not keen on strangers but will accept them and calm down after a few mins of em being in the house. ive never seen or heard of a dog so loyal to its famely and belive me will protect them so furiously wether it be animal or human. with the right training and love the breed is a fantastic one. anyways all the best mate

That was one of the things that attracted me to them Steve - the protective loyal nature - I go off now and again to work abroad, and it is historical Japanese fact that Akitas would protect the family to the death.

I'd have been very happy with an Akita, but the missus fell head over heels with the OES family of 10 we met. As an inexperienced dog owner she felt safer with them, which I respect. Next time maybe...

(The OES will so take the P out of her when I'm away )

The best way to stop a dog howling is to balance it with a small piece of lead. This needs to be inserted into animals ear with appropiate instument such as 22 rifle.

Hope this helps.

Must say that this method is probably better for your neighbours annoying animals rather than your own innocent pet.

I think the akita is a beautiful looking animal, I know little about the breed but sounds like my kinda dog, I have always had kerry blue terriers (now have 2 yr old bitch) and they have a bit of a reputation as being vicious, they are plain and simply being protective.
I have never come across a more loyal breed of dog.

for the hard of reading - "smoked bone". sterilised bone matter, steam cleaned, then smoked. no meat available. but damned tasty if you're a dog. because it's a bone.

who said "cooked bone?" anyone say cooked bone?

worked for me. worked for my dog. take your pick.

...not if it bites your grollies off first. or even dribbles gently in your ear, leaving it slightly damp.
