The wife wants a new watch for Christmas, I know she has just spent £249:50 on a watch for me [cos eing only 14 I found it, tested it, set it etc etc] so guess its only fair I spend the same.

any suggestions ?

Claim that you're superstitious and then cite the superstition that the relationship will last only as long as the watch. Once that breaks, the relationship will fail and you wouldn't want that to happen.
