As I seem to be in the company of like mined people, whats the best video game ever?

Elite on the BBC was the most absorbing
Speedball 2000 on the Amiga was fun
Granturismo is the best driving game (GT2 was not a good)
Metal Gear solid was just stunning and imaginitive.

I think its got to be Elite for me......

Oh dear I can see everyone getting all nostalgic over their Commodore 64s and Spectrums. If you remember Commodore 64 and Spectrum games as being excellent DON'T download any of the emulators as you will realise how crap they really were! Better just to have the memories.....

Anyway my favourate games ever (The ones which kept my attention longest) :

Gran Tourismo (Playstation)

Wizball (Commodore 64)
Last Ninja 1 and 2 (Commodore 64)

Super Mario World (SNES)
Pilot Wings (SNES)
F Zero (SNES)
Zelda 3 (SNES)

Tetris (Gameboy)
Mario Land (Gameboy)

Super Mario Kart (Nintendo 64 4 player, using a lightning bolt on Wario Stadium before the jump ment a kick in the head!!)

Red Alert (Multiplayer PC)
Quake (Multiplayer PC)
X wing vs Tie Fighter (Multiplayer PC)

As you may have guessed I used to live in a house with 3 other IT guys so the first thing we did when we moved in was install a network!! Games such as Red Alert and X wing vs Tie Fighter are amazing when you have 4 players!!

Of the dozens of PS F1 games that were launched this year which is the best?

I have fond memories of a game on the Spectrum where you had to drive around the streets in a Lotus Esprit chasing after the bad guys.

Unfortunately memories are so fond I can't remember what it's called.

PFF

Having just read ptholts full answer I find that it was surprisingly called Lotus Esprit. Sheesh

I think Lotus Turbo Challenge was an Amiga game (and crap with it -- got an Esprit and an Elan alternately to play with).

The game you mean is Turbo Esprit by Durell. Still excellent, even though Romford isn't like it is in the game (don't remember any six-lane highways when I was last there...)

I understand Driver/Driver 2 is the modern-day Turbo Esprit -- must get a copy.

1) Elite on The BBC. Looked apnts but had the most absorbing gameplay ever. It was the daddy of its day
2) Resident Evil. I've never been scared palying a game before.
3) Syphon Filter. Not as good looking as Metal Gear but having played both, Syphon Filter is more involving.
4) Dyna Blaster ( Super Bomber Man) the most fun you can have with 4 friends ( unless they are 4 lady friends)
5) Gran Tourismo 2. The best driving game.. well I think.
6) Galaxians.. you can't beat it !!

Wolfenstein was the first game of its type I ever played, crude now but ground breaking at the time.

Half-Life is my favourite though, followed by Quake, Quake 2 and Colin McRae rally.

TOCA & TOCA 2 are great if you fancy doing a track day from home.

Cool

I'm with GT on this - Speedball on the Amiga was fantastic. Still get a kick playing Doom on the Playstation and my all time favourite - the original wire frame graphics Star Wars found in all the best arcades in the early 80s - the only game I was ever truely any good at.

Good memories

Cheers

GT on Playstation is quite good.

But can anyone remember good old "KickStart" on the C64 ? Now that is a classic.

But my favorite ever is Defender (arcade version). If anyone knows of a pukka (not improved) version for the PC, let me know.

Cheers

In the arcades there was a table top footie game called Teikan World Cup. Players were controlled using a rollerball type input. This remains the finest football game ever, IMHO.

I also notice not many votes for Megadrives here, Sonic the Hedgehog was a great platform game and EA Sports Ice hockey was tremendous, you could start fights and there would be blood on the ice.

They just don't make them like they used to

Too many good ones to have an outright winner.

Arcade - Dawn of the Dead
Playstation - Doom or Wipeout 2097
PC - Unreal Tournament or GPL
Megadrive - Sonic or Kid Chameleon

A special mention must go to Defender from Williams though. How many people spent all their dinner money trying to get throught the space stages with no smart bombs left!!

Ah, nostalgia!

Geezer
