do digital video cameras still need a tape?
a friend says he nearly bought one at the weekend and it needed tapes but they were quite small ones!
surely they use a memory stick or something?
any info would be appreciated

Any proper DV camcorder takes mini-DV magnetic tapes.
DV data rate is about 3Mb/s, so NO memory card would be able to hold more than tens of seconds worth of film.....
The only other camcorder I know that doesn't use magnetic tape is the Hitachi one that records to a mini-DVD type drive.....

Just to give you an idea, most mini-DV tapes are 60 minutes long. At 3Mb/s, this equates to 10.8Gb on each tape roughly...
No memory stick I know of can hold anywhere near that - 512Mb max???

I should clarify - my camcorder takes mini-dv tapes AND compact flash solid state cards....
Stills can be recorded to either medium. Video can only be recorded to the mini-dv magnetic tape.
