Is my Toshiba Widescreen TV Knackered ?
#1
I've got a Toshiba 28" Dolby Pro TV which is about 3 and a half years old.
I put it on standby for about an hour and when I put it back on again the picture came back with everything tinged yellow. I've tried switching it on and off a few times but the picture stays yellow.
Is it knackered ?
Cheers for any help as I'm not a TV expert.
Nathan..

Dry joint .......easy sorted. 5 min job
you will prob find if you give it a bump on the back you may get the color back (reconnect the joint)
doesnt sound like you have too much to worry about.
Paul
(I have been known to be wrong..........not often though )

TV well and truly smacked like a bitch and everything is still yellow. You can really notice it if you disconect the aerial.
Where is the dry joint liable to be? I thought solder only really did this after years and years not just three years ?

i did 3 years at tech college on these things before getting my first job. My dad was head trainer for rumbelows many moons ago too, so i grew up with this stuff.
My technical answer is
BIG HAMMER.
Sounds like one of the electron guns has gone down, (they have a red, blue and green electron gun if you didnt know ), either the tube is bolloxed or the driver circuitry for the elctron gun has failed. Get an engineer to look at it, they should be able to tell you within a matter of minutes if the tube is screwed or its a board fix issue.

shouldnt be if its just a board fix. It could be something as simple as a blown fuse, they do have them on the boards. Get it looked at, you could be freting over nothing.
Oh, and please dont go looking inside for a fuse now! They have charged components in there, that even after a day switched off could kill you.

Nathan, my dad is a TV repair man he maybe able to help you, wouldmean you dropping it over though..
Drop me a mail if you want more info.
Oh, and I used to be a TV/Video engineer aswell, there's nothing in a TV that could kill you after being switched off for more than a few minutes
The smoothing cap in the mains cct would give you a belt if you got across it, but they generally discharge within 10 minutes or so to a level that would still hurt. Microwaves Capacitors are the nasty buggers, they are mahoosive but even they have a built in discharge so the charge is reduced quite quick after power is off.
Saying that, I wouldn't try fixing it unless you know what you're doing

a little experiment for you mega_stream.
Open up the back, take the HT conector off the tube, stick one hand on the chassis earth, stick the other hand on the tube conection, pick yourself up off the floor 10" from where you were stood, go to casualty (if you are lucky!)
27,000 volts takes rather a long time to discharge from a TV tube, which is why disposing of old TV's should be done by a qualified person, you shouldnt just dump them at the tip. (you should also break the tube neck seal so if some kid chucks a brick at it, it doesnt implode and mame the poor bugger.

EHT charge from a powered off TV might make you jump, but it wouldn't put you in hospital.
Volts might be high for a brief time after a TV is powered off, but it discharges quite quickly and is low current.
Its not the volts that kill, its the current.

I would not like to try that experiment myself, i have seen plenty enough KV on a switched off TV tube to produce enough I to stop your heart. I guess we have to disagree
Good luck Nathan, hope its something cheap.

Cheers John.
I hope so too, I Can't be doing with spending a grand on a new Television before Xmas. Then again it could be a good oportunity to upgrde slightly to 5.1 DTS etc.
