Anyone heard of these?
I'm in Thailand at present, and there are stacks of good films available for peanuts. But it seems people don't have that many DVDs, they all have video CDs.
So, to quote Alas Smith and Jones, "Wossat then?"
If I bring one home, can I play it in a DVD player? At present my DVD is in my computer, but eventually I'd like a separate one. Would it play these VCDs?
Oh yeah - happy Christmas to all!!
Brendan

Yes, any home dvd player, computer dvd-rom drive, & computer cd-rom drive can play vcd discs. For home dvd players, just stick the disc in & it'll play automatically. For dvd-rom/cd-rom drives, all u need is a software dvd player (such as windvd) to play the vcds.
Picture quality of vcds are on a par with short play vhs recordings, but far inferior when compared to dvds. Most feature-length films require 2 vcd discs.

I have found that not all Home DVD players will play VCD's, though quite a few do.
As has been said the quality can vary between a damned good copy from a DVD and a rip of someone sat in the cinema with a video camera. i have had both and all in between in the past and some are absolutely unwatchable. Usually worth the risk though afor a couple of quid.

Check to see if your dvd is compatible

some vcds are good quality, taken straight from a dvd/vhs screener and some are poor cams.Svcd is your best bet, almost dvd quality, usually on 3disks though for a normal film

Hello
As above really.
The ones in Thailand do range from good quality (normally older films) albeit with Thai or Chinese subtitles to very bad. The very bad is usually someone sitting at the back of a cinema with a Video camera. Great for that "authentic" cinema experience: Munching sweets / popcorn and people laughing at inappropriate moments. Along with the (usually Chinese) nattering.
Steve.

Those Chinese discs are usually pirated from cinemas in Hong Kong, but not anymore, as genuine VCD (or DVD) are very cheap in Hong Kong - abt GBP1.5 for a VCD film or GBP3 for a DVD film.
If u pick up VCDs from large department stores in Bangkok, then they are genuine & should be of acceptable quality (i.e. bilingual & dubbed off the master rather than in the cinema).

Thanks all. Didn't reply earlier as a) computer was so slow and b) trying to clean my password off the machine took bloody ages!
Had another look, have found a number of good films on DVD so will stick to that. As said, copy will vary, but worth it for that price.
