For trains try different senarios at www.thetrainline.com. I usually work at what is best and then buy the ticket on the day, especially at this time of year when the post is npot reliable. It is expensive - £67-50 for an open single.
There seems to be a replacement bus for the later part of the journey sticking 1.5 hours on the total journey time so after new year may well be best.
The coach is £39-50 and the quickest I found took nearly 8 hours. Try www.gobycoach.co.uk
