Hi , i had an unlucky xmas period and got caught speeding twice , once by a speed camera police van which i got 3 points for.

I also got caught on the M1 by a car. Now he gave me a Fixed Penalty Fine , on the yellow bit of paper he gave me it said nothing at all about getting any points on it. Just that i had to pay £60 fine and nothing would come of it.

I got my license through this morning and there is an SP50 on it and i have got 3 points.

Does a fixed penalty fine come with a madatory 3 points ? I wasnt told of any points etc..

Also , what will this do to my insurance , i dont have a subaru yet but im not looking forward to telling my insurance co about this. I was quoted £1500 with a clean license , any rough estimates how much this is likely to go up by ?

thanks
brett

I had my first 3 points in 20 years last September :-(. It was with a fixed camera, I was doing 38 in a 30 (and it wasn't even in the scoob!). That gave me an SP30 with 60 pound fine. Didn't appear to make any difference on my insurance - maybe an SP50 will?

if you're caught speeding then points are a given.

SP50 just relates to the speed zone at were you got caught

Insurance companies take into consideration your age, years of careful driving etc but an SP50 will grant an increase in your premium, especially with 6 points and fairly recently.

As I understand, you dont get points with an sp50 offence code. It's usually a higher fine or a ban, and you can contest it, in my experience. I think it was an insurance bloke who told me. I didnt get points for my sp50 - which was on the M40 a few years ago, but always have for sp30's.

An endorseable fixed penalty notice will ALWAYS get you 3 points and £60 fine. You are reported for offences that go to court and don't get a ticket (although you'll probably get a producer)

If you contest the ticket you can OPT to have your case heard in court.

SP50 is speeding on a motorway - 3 points £60. up to 95 mph at which point you should (officially) be reported.

You send off a cheque and hand over your licence either at the time of the offence or at the police station when you produce.

cheers

Paul

Dont listen to some of the "IIRC" stuff. Any speeding offense with fixed penalty gets you 3 points. The codes just relate to where it was - SP30, public road, SP50 Motorway etc etc.

I had an SP50 in 97, with 3 pts and £40 fine - it never really put my insurance up much, though 6 points will.

Thanks a lot people , i talked to my insurance co , points only matter when i renew my policy but they do like to know if i have them.

That time also coincides with another yr driving and another yr no claim (touches wood) ... insurance premium hopefully wont go up too much then.

Thumbs down

Think yourself lucky - my first ever (one of two) speeding offence was an SP50 (92mph on the M4 in Oxfordshire, 1 or two other cars about, dry sunny day) and I got 150 quid fine, 35 quid court cost and 4 sodding points!

It didn't effect my insurance hugely.. depends which broker/insurance group you are with.

Alex

PS. I'm not bitter honest...

Count yourself fookin' lucky an extra mph for me got me 3 points and a £260 fine with an SP50 code! The insurance wasn't too bothered - but when I had another 3 points added for an offence a month later - that's when they whacked the premiums up.

Moral? Don't fookin' take the pi55 and speed like I did. I have slowed down a atad since. So the points system does work after all. LOL

Cool

A quote with no points came to £2200 - My actually insurance with 6 points is now £2900.

I am insuring a 22B with 1 yrs no claims though, so don't despair yet.
