![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I'm driving down from Wigan in Lancashire all the way to Truro in Cornwall for a family 'do' tomorrow. I've got all day to make the journey, so I've had the idea of taking an alternative route down through Wales that avoids the M6 and Birmingham. Maybe picking up the M5 just north of Bristol having crossed the Severn Bridge?
I don't really know much about the routes through Wales other than that there is some superb driving to be had. I don't mind if it adds an hour or two onto my journey time, as I'd rather be driving than sat in traffic jams. Can anybody offer any route advice? (Or is this a totally daft idea?!)
Thanks in advance!![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

If you only want to add an hour or two I would take a detour through Shropshire.
Come off the M6 taking M56 to Chester. Take A483 Wrexham Bypass to Oswestry. Then take A5 to Shrewsbury.
At Shrewsbury take A49 through Ludlow & Leominster. Then before Hereford take A417 to Gloucester joining M5.
Pleasant run should take about 2.5 to 3 hours. If you want to stop on the way both Ludlow and Leominster are pleasant old market towns. There are plenty of pub\restauarants on the way too.

If you are planning to drive in North Wales, you may want to check out http://www.arrivealive.org.uk/schedule/ first, just in case!!!
