CAT AND MOUSE
Prescott told parliament he believed the FBU was not serious about reaching a negotiated settlement but was "playing cat and mouse with the employers, the Government and public money".
The dispute had so far cost taxpayers 70 million pounds, he said.
Responding to Tuesday`s strike, local government employers called off two days of planned talks with the FBU, saying they would not negotiate while industrial action continued.
They said in a statement: "Meaningful negotiations cannot continue with the threat of strike action hanging over them and cannot resume until the FBU returns to normal working with no future threat to strike."
Around 19,000 armed forces personnel will provide fire cover for the duration of the strike at a time when thousands are being deployed to the Gulf for a possible war with Iraq.
A further two-day walkout is planned for Saturday.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
These Firemen have cost us £70million
At a time when the army is going to be fighting in the desert, these people are holding out for 40% PLUS keeping their cosy 1947 working conditions!!
Its never been a strike supported by the majority - how can any group of workers, let alone some who actually have to work VERY little - DEMAND a 40% increase in pay???
The nurses wouldnt even dream of acting like this and hence would carry public support along with them - Firemen are NOT a special case, they do a job and get paid for it. All this cr4p about they have a dangerous job is purely that, they KNEW what they had to do and they KNEW the pay and conditions - AND accepted that when they took the job on .................. END OF STORY!!
Never forget that there are 40 applicants per firemans job - that doesnt tell you that the pay and conditions are very generous??

Well, Astraboy - I would help you out of a wreckage if I was first there even though you are a complete plank!
BUT what the hell has that got to do with pay and conditions??? Its people like you with scrambled minds that cant 'quite' get it can you??
Job Description:- Put out fires and cut people out of cars
Pay and Conditions:- X, Y and Z
If you accept the terms and conditions fine - sign here - if not, GO AND DO ANOTHER JOB!!!!!!
SIMPLE, even for you?????????????????????????

What's that got to do with the firemen?
The over-stretch of the forces through the strike has NObearing on the price of oil. Just the retention of the forces.

Saw the item Pete posted yesterday. All I can say is that either Fatty Two Jags reads this page, or "I told you so".
B4 Christmas we had a discussion on firefighters, and I pointed out then that the government would lose patience and do what they did to teachers in 1988: imposed settlement, no rights of negotiating pay or conditions, imposed conditions, and they still haven't any rights after 15 years!
Look out firemen......the writing is on the wall.:
Alcazar
BTW: teachers weren't even striking in '88, just working to rule!

£70 mill is a one off expense.
Settlement is recurring. Particularly as it will increase the pension firemen would then be entitled to. Local authorities are already strrugling to pay the generous pensions from pension funds that aren't growing at the same rate as their liabilities.

Astraboy I'm on your side- 40% of crap money still leaves the firefighters on crap pay (30K not enuff to live in SE England). I'm not sure where this 2nd job/hours sleeping stuff comes from and I'm pretty sure some of it may be true but so what............I reckon those that whinge are the typical Brits who love to see others do worse than them, hate a winner and are generally just trying to drag everyone else down to their petty controlling level. Give them the 40% we can easily afford it! Just waste less on bullsh*t like the forthcoming war, Dome etc

OK, but 2.5 BILLION would pay the firemen, nurses and police (and the other services) for a good few years to come.
Prescott is a lardy arsed hypocrite with a short memory.
If he was a firemen, he'd be first on the picket line.

What is going to be very entertaining is when the firemen end up worse than the position they are currently in, realise Andy Gilchrist has dropped them totally in the ****, and turn on him.......

Loads of people 'deserve' more or less but it's all down to economics. Please discuss this using sound economic reasoning. Anything else is pointless. Sentimentality is all well and good but if the money is not there, the money is not there! Has to be funded somehow.

And a Fireman is a 'winner'??????????????? WTF R U on??
Firemen are firemen because they are too thick to do anything else - HENCE they are paid thicko wages!! They have been happy until now, not having to work and getting £21000!!
Pete
By the way, who gave them permission to use the uniform while on strike?? I didnt and I bl00dy paid for it!!!!
AND
The WAR money will be repaid from IRAQI oil revenue, so its a freebie test of weapons - sorted!! everyones a winner!

Yet again, the government creates more laws to suit themselves. If they face a situation, where they know they are in the wrong and cant win...lets make it illegal, and force their half witted will on the people.
Get these ar5seholes out of government as soon as possible. It is an absolute joke. Their supporters should also be locked up in jail, or mental institutes.

Two-Jags is (as per usual) talking out of his ****!!!!
So precisely what has this GBP70M been spent on ??? Surely the army have to be paid, whether they are playing firemen or shooting at cardboard cut-outs???
And presumably when firemen are on strike, they don't get paid? Thus for every day they take off, they are (conservatively) saving GBP20000/365 each - about 55 quid. Aren't there about 50,000 firemen in the UK, thus for every strike day, the government will save TWO POINT SEVEN MILLION POUNDS!!!!!
Prescott is playing the school bully 'cos daddy B.Liar is telling him to . Trouble is that he is stirring up a hornets nest with the TUC, and he is going to get stung big-time!!!!!

Pete,
so if the TUC reduce their funding of New Labia (who already have a massive overdraft) then it won't cause problems?
Oh, and do you have an answer to my original question - "just where does FattiesQuadrupleChin's GBP70M figure come from"????

Have to agree with Boomer on this. Prescott is heading for Trouble with Unions. He tried to ban us Tanker drivers from going on Strike after Fuel blockades. P lewis, Hope your happy with ****** Blair flying around the world trying to get support for War then hes off to camp david to get stuck up Bushes *** again, On Tax Payers Money i may add. Without Public support this War is going no where. Back to Firefighter Mr lewis. Have u ever been involved in a RTA (serious one i mean ) if the Answers no, i suggest u Shut up . I was involved in a Serious RTA a few years back on a very foggy morning in Worcs on M42. with about 100 vehicles involved. With out them i wouldn,t have seen my 9 daughter or my wife again. They are proffesionals and very good at what they do.. and deserve more pay. U wanna try being stranded in a Truck with 40.000 litres of Unleaded 6 feet behind you unable to move.
