If you are, or if you know an ex-teacher, what are they doing now(other than retirement)?

You can mistake an ex-teacher easily, so be careful - please ensure it not just a teacher on holiday!!

My mistake, I should have added: Muppets need not reply, or something to that effect.

All the ex-teachers I know are coming back to school - they can earn a fortune these days - they get the kind of money that a Fireman would strike for!!

But then firemen used to get respect; a second job, and loads of luverly ladies throwing themselves at them- thrown in for free, and with 40(?) applications per post the job can't be too bad.

Anyway, slightly off-thread.

There seems to be a lot in the press about new teachers leaving the profession within a few years, and 40% current teachers said that they plan to change carreers within the next 5 years. So what sort of things do they change to?

Ok, here we go - I am in a very good position to comment on this topic, as always!!

I have known about 15 teachers leave our school in 3 years, about 3 went into outside business, 1 got made redundant, 11 went to better paid teaching jobs ( or went supply )

The 3 that went into outside business joined Education type companies.

I know of three: one is self employed DIY man, one is in IT, and the other is an HGV driver.

Andrew

What I mean by 'our' is that I am the Chairman of Governors at the Local Community School, 1000 pupils aged 11-16, £3.3Million Budget, over 60 Staff ............ one of the VERY best Schools in the UK - state, that is!!

So I kind of have a personal interest in it as I am pretty much in the hot seat so far as responsibilities go - and I like to think of it as 'OUR' school - its totally unpaid work, but VERY rewarding when you see the small terrified 11year olds arrive and, 5 years later, say goodbye to 16year olds with hope in their eyes!! - I will assume that its OK that I call it 'our' school?

Pete

For sure it's OK to call it 'our' school. I was just interested as to why you phrased it so. Didn't mean to be blunt.

Unhappy

Pete: can't remember what it's called, but it has a swan on the badge, I think, and it's the school that Milly Dowler was at :
