Win98 SE - Install Problem
#1
New Install
800PIII & 128mb RAM & Tyan m'board
Adaptec 2940 with 2x4gb CDRW
IDE 32x CD-ROM or DVD
Either when booting via SCSI CD-ROM or booting from IDE DVD or CD-ROM come up with error along the lines of -
"Unable to load drivers into memory - contact your vendor to get updated drivers"
If I then do a DIR I get all the exe's but no directories, so unable to change to the win98 directory to run setup
What's going on! What do I need to do. Never had a similar problem before on similar setups...
Thanks

Never heard of this, but do you have the Win98 startup disk available? if so I would use this, copy the win98 directory from the CD to the hard drive, and install from there.
Always do this as it speeds up any time that it needs to access these files (you dont have to find and stick the CD in when in needs install files).
Im guessing its not loading the correct memory drivers, so its not got enough resources.

Created a startup disk @ work & took it home.
Tried to boot & get the following exact message...
"The compression driver cannot be set up correctly.
Get a version from your vendor that is compatible with this version of Windows.
Press any key to continue..."
WTF!
Are we talking Tyan, Adaptec or someone else?
Help!!!!

When you say 'new install' do you mean a brand new blank hard disk? If so, has a logical DOS partition been created using fdisk.exe and has it been properly formatted?
If it's an older hard disk and you don't need any files on it then format it and try again. Also, make sure all the memory is detected on the memory test so you know everything is ok in that department.
I've done quite a few Windows installations and haven't seen this problem before. By the way, the setup.exe file is found in the root of the WIN98 SE CD (ie d:setup.exe).

When I had a problem with these CAB files, I believe they're referred to as, I found the only way I could cure it was to format the HDD and start again from scratch.
No other solution, and I came across a few, made any difference.
