A mate wants to get an AV receiver for DVD and music playback.
Ideally it has to be a Sony and not too expensive.
Anyone got any ideas ??

I'd recommend the SONY STRDB780 circa £240 from the likes of Superfi etc.
This QS spec and is adapted for the UK market to remove the slightly harsher sound the Jap's prefer. He'll need a seperate DVD player as this is an Amp/Tuner only.
I tried several different Sony models before Xmas and bought one of these.
Regards,
Ian

Mines now about 3-4 years old now but I still love the Sony STRDB930.. it was the dogs at the time and highly recommended as being much better than most amps at over twice the price (retailed at £450).. I know things have moved on since but you should get a second hand one very well priced.

Dave,
Has he got a budget as one persons "Not too expensive" is someone elses cheap
?
I run a Sony STR-VA555ES which I find to be a cracking bit of kit for both DVD-Video, CD, SACD and DVD-A playback. It was around the £750 mark (which I class as expensive even though it is £250 cheaper than you would pay at a Sony Centre). Sound is what some would class on the bright side, but I would class it as "precise", i.e. not warm and fuzzy like some of the more music orientated amps.
Take a look at HotKits website as they list many of the Sony AV Receivers for good money. I've dealt with these people a lot and can recommend them.
Cheers
Ian
