Do we have any happy BT OpenWorld users on here?

A while ago I was evaluating both ADSL and Cable as a means to connect to the Internet. I chose Blueyonder cable which I'm really happy with.
Now, I've got a job on and the only solution is ADSL as cable isn't in the area.
What I'd like to know is, is ADSL still beset by all the problems I heard about when it was initially rolled out or have all those problems been fixed ?
I'm looking to get in Business 500 from BT. I'd be keen to hear from anyone who uses any of the BT ADSL packages.

I have clients that i got onto the BT bandwagon early on via Demon and warned them of the potential problems at the time and they had a lot of them. Got to the brink of signing up with a third party leased line system instead, but BT got their act together and sorted things out. They have now deployed it through 7 of their branches varying from the 512kbps links to the 2mbps and swear by it.
I would say that they now have a decent backbone structure for everyone to use.
Cheers,
Nick

BT's web proxies have been getting on my nerves recently - slow and unreliable.
Luckily for me I'm in a position to run my own proxy, just for me but to others not in such a position I imagine they are banging heads against walls.
At the moment I could not recommend OpenWorld for this reason.

I'm no IT bod but we've just got Openworld at work and have experienced problems when sending non openworld account Emails via the openworld connection. It wont even recognise a BT click account!
We are not the only ones either and BT have acknowledged that there is a problem at their end.
Just to let you know...

Wot, so their SMTP server checks the email address to make sure its got a .btopenworld suffix or something ? Thats daft!
It also buggers me up, as we use email forwarding from a web host!
Thanks for the info

Don't know exactly how it does it but we can only send emails from our @btinternet.com account down the ADSL, at the moment all mails sent via other @addresses are going down the usual modem otherwise they are not recieved!!
Openworld recieves all incoming mail but is a tad selective about mails sent!!
BT are trying to fix it ASAP, but its been more than a fortnight now... Our IT man wouldn't reccommend it.

My DSL is through demon & has been since March last year.
The testers group did a load of tests last year on 'transparent' proxies specifically for DSL connections. Ended up binning it.
Now, if they could do the same with their billing department, I'd be really happy.

Mines £40 also. We did the trial on a 2mb connection, with ethernet rather than usb. When the trial ended, BT couldn't figure a way to 'downgrade' the connection to 512k.
..so until demon get round to giving us USB modems, I'll happily pay £40 / month for a 2 meg connection
:-)

For your email problems, it's because your normal mail account's mail server is not an open relay - and neither should it be.
Just change your outgoing mail (smtp) server to be the openclick one.
So, if you have a mail account that's something like
incoming server: pop3.freeserve.co.uk
outgoing server: smtp.freeserve.co.uk
Change the outgoing server to the bt openworld
Nick.

We have an ADSL through another provider for our company... which of course is BT at the end of the day. It's dreadful, we've recently had a 9 day outage and customer support at our provider and BT is awful.
Personally I'd recommend a leased line - we used to have one of those from uunet... costs more, but actually does what it says on the tin.
Simon.

Simon, thanks - seems the quality of the service is depnedant on where you live in the country according to what people are reporting on here.
I'd have gone for cable, as I can't sing Telewest BlueYonder's praises enough for my setup. Trouble is, they want a minimum of something like £133 a month if its going into a business, which is too much for a small company.
