Its that time of year again. I have made 20+ calls this morning. First was to a current insurer. They quoted me 2400 quid. I was expecting approx 1600. Endless phone calls and details later I had a quote for 1175.00 I called current insurer again and told them of this quote. They called me back 5 minutes later and told me they could do it for 1130.00 if I accepted today. Was the other grand and a bit just some margin for them to play with? Every single company other than the people who quoted me 1175.00 have subsequently dropped the price. I get the impression that if I stick with this for another 3 or 4 days I will find a company who will give me money so that they can insure my car... Gggggggrrrrrrrrrr

Had the same problem last week when renewal was due. Last year Norwich Union covered my RB5WR for £650 - car in wife's name with me as named driver. This year they wanted £977 for the same cover after making no claims or modifications whatsoever

Tried the usual search engine suspects via Autobytel and The AA with some alarming results - quotes varied from £1300 to £850 Then I remembered the adverts for Directline and used their website for a quote, filled in the details and was quoted £685

Paid online and papers arrived next morning

From this and previous years experience it would appear some companies quote silly prices on the basis that you might renew with them regardless, or you might get quotes in the same price range and choose one of them anyway. Amazing how they can match deals offered elsewhere when asked
