Rescue Dogs

ok buckle up!
i was at the local dog rescue place the other day (had been looking after a dog they wanted to home)
the place was packed! lots of ppl all going soppy after the puppies, they had a crate of jack russels bought in while i was there...within 10 mins all of them had new homes!
wandered round and realised they had lots of older dogs just sat in cages where (according to the workers there) they would stay for some time. Puppies obviously go first.
so i thought....why keep them like this? no other animal would be kept in this way, why not just put them to sleep? whats the point in keeping strays in cages for months/years?
and on a similar point people who want a puppy shouldnt be allowed one without some sort of extensive testing! the jack russles where a good example....nice and cute but grow up to be nasty yappy snappy dogs!
anyway...just concluded that it was an odd way to run things?

.....and nobody adopts pensioners. Everyone that is adopting only look for children.
Why keep pensioners in homes for months/years. Why not put them down.
So you are saying that an old dog should be put down instead of having the chance of a new home. What age are you thinking of setting as a DEADline?
Think again.

i think a human is different to a dog isnt it? (although saw a funny Bill Hicks stand up where he suggested he rather see his gran get used as an extra in a Chuck Norris movie than die a slow death in a hospital- sort of a suicidal stunt extra)
set an age.....2

Badger - what a great analogy (I think that's the right word)! Made me chuckle.
But a lot of people looking for a rescue dog take this route exactly because they dont want the hassle of a puppy. There are so many reasons for an adult dog ending up in a home - owner passed away, moved abroad, etc. No reason why this dog cannot be rehomed. Or, the dog is unmanageable. In this case the fairest thing for all concerned (ie potential new owner aswell as the dog) is for the dog to be put to sleep.
Only my opinion obviously and I speak as a doglover who, due to unforeseen circumstances had to give up my beloved 2 year old Springer Spaniel, Riffraff.

I have a rescue dog. Really makes me angry the way people can't be bothered to look after their pets. Puppies are for life not Xmas. Why can't people get it into their thick heads?? If you can't look after a dog then don't bloody get one!
If I worked for the RSPCC I'd have to be restrained from the owner(Scum) going into a house where an animal had been severly neglected.
One thing think hard about getting a rescue dog as once you go into those Kennels, its impossible not to choose one especially if they're looking sry for themselves.

Popeye - I agree with you entirely. But there are some instances where giving up a dog is unavoidable.
Also, there is a big difference between dogs which are given up by their owners (for whatever reason) and those which have been taken off their owners due to abuse/neglect.

So by tiggs logic lets just euthanaise everyone in an retirement/nursing home
(Not that that would be all bad an idea )
You get far more from rehoming a rescue dog.
For one,the dog is well aware of its second chance in life.
Some people will just never get it

I had a rescue Staffy
Thought that this may have been a silly idea, given that Staffys are slightly demented at the best of times...
But, he was so glad that I fed and walked him twice a day, and didn't beat the living **** out of him that he was as good as gold!
Poor little blighter had a tumor though - a testament to his early life, and he had to be PTS after about three years...

I have a rescue doberman/rottweiler cross. Went for him because he was older. He's a nightmare but calming down slowly. He's overly grateful for being walked, fed and groomed regularly. After the initial problems you get with some rescue dogs, they turn into probably the best pets you could have.
Some people are so cruel to animals it makes me sick. Trev (my dog) had obviously been beaten by his last owners, before they abandoned him and left him to fend for himself on the streets. He cowers and flinches if you make a sudden movement with your hand. We are trying to help him overcome this fear but it'll take time. If I could find the last owners, I'd show them how it feels to be in the dogs shoes while he was with them!!!

I totally disagree with the idea that they should be destroyed.
Since I have been on gardening leave from being made redundant I decided to volunteer my time at the local animal rescue centre. Believe it or not there are many people who do this and we go and walk the dogs, make a fuss of them and let them run around in the play area while supervised. The dogs are not locked up 24 hours a day and spend a large amount of the time being taken out.
In addition to this then there are the staff who do all the feeding and cleaning out and excersise the dogs on top of what the volunteers do. The dogs have plenty of human contact and timeout of their pens.
The only difficulty I have is that since being there I have become fond of about 3 of the dogs there but under no circumstances can I own one living in a flat etc. Its a shame as the ones I like are the ones who have been there the longest and who no one wants When I get a new job it will be impossible for me to give it the time it needs. Working at the home for me is the next best thing to owning a dog.
The only dogs who should be put down are the ones who are a severe danger to the public and ones that are suffering pain from terminal illnesses. Perfectly healthy dogs should never be put down. Luckily that is the policy of this place that I go to.
Anyone thinking of getting another dog let me know or please contact your local home before buying privately!

lol- you lot do get excited...i say "kill dog" you say "oh oh Tiggs said kill old people and babies and nuns"
i OWN 3 rescue dogs so i dont need telling about that!
i also belive they are an excellent place to get a dog, in fact i dont quite understand why people breed from dogs that are their "pets"...are there not enough dogs in the world already?
my point was is it better for a dog (thats been in a home for agessss) to be killed (not a NUN..a DOG) or is it better to spend its life in a pen. only one of you has suggested good reason to keep them alive although i do wonder how much fun they have at 9pm when the volenters hav left and they are shut up and not chillin on a sofa?

my Nan is on her 3rd rescue dog
the fist was a puppy which died a few years back aged about 12, it was mad until it died, it was too much for my Nan but she loved the little thing, the next was an old dog, did not want much walking bit like my Nan, just food warmth & freindship again like my Nan, this dog had all maner of things wrong with it, my Nan spent a fortune on this dog, but did not care as he gave her company, he had to be put down eventualy as he was in pain & the vets could do nothing else for him, on that day an old lady took a 5 year old cross thing in to the vets saying it was too much for her, my Nan said she would have it, the dog is a bit mad, need more training [so does my Nan] so they go to classes but are both very happy.
Neither of my dogs are rescue animals, my wife wanted to know the dogs history & back grounds before agreeing to them due to my kids etc etc.
I went to Battersea dogs home once, nearlyleft there in tears, so sad, I would have taken every dog in their if I could

I rescued a very cute Westie from Westie Rescue 6 years ago, she was nasty, unkempt and didn't know where she wanted to be.
After a few visits to an animal psycologist she really calmed down, since then she has gone blind and is now diabetic.....awe.....but a treasure to have and daft as a brush!!

Hi Merc, no I havent gone down that route yet as seeing how things develop! Have the info ready to use if needed tho
Tiggs
true but how many farm dogs etc get to curl up on the sofa as opposed to living in a kennel outside? Are you suggesting any dog that spends its evenings outside in a kenel should be destroyed because it has no evening life???
The dogs I see have a life, all be it a crap one in comparision to living in a house, but its still a life which allows them the chance to be rehomed. The majority only stay a few weeks as they have a very high turnover. Unfortunately the longest visitor has been there 9 months and is one of the ones I would have without battering an eyelid. Why people don't want him I don't know. And another one which is my favourite who is a 1 eyed dalmation cross is one of the most affectionate dogs I have ever been around. Some people just want perfect looks and that annoys me. She is a fantastic little dog. Its rewarding being there but at the same time its very difficult having to walk away knowing you can't take them home with you.

Money, unfortunately in many cases.
However, most responsible home breeders will have homes for the dogs before they breed.
Oh, and its healthier for a bitch to have a litter than not.
